The isolation experienced in the recent pandemic gives readers a valuable insight into what adults with developmental disabilities face throughout life. Norman found a unique solution to this isolation and created the organization, Among Friends. Here, Miranda Steffen, executive director of AF, talks about their mission, how they are handling these difficult times when socialization can’t take place in person and ways the community can help. Miranda and the Among Friends community “believe in commUNITY inclusion, and advocate for Friendships with all sorts of incredible humans: whether you walk, roll, speak, or sign—we all have something to contribute!”
History
Since 2003, Among Friends has been providing a safe and friendly place for adults with developmental disabilities and additional needs. Our center was created after Jenny Fox, a high school student, was in a life-altering car accident, resulting in paralysis and a traumatic brain injury. Her mother, Cathe Fox, realized that Jenny suddenly did not have a place to go during the day to socialize with peers and she made it her mission to provide a place for friends who found themselves in the same position.
We are NOT an adult daycare. Many adults with developmental disabilities don't have the luxury of choice as often as their peers without disabilities. We provide a variety of programs, activities and social opportunities throughout the day. Each member chooses what to do that makes their day meaningful. There is no other program like ours in the state.
When the organization was founded in 2003, it had six members. Today, we have about 50 active members.
Personal Involvement
I am a parent of a teenager with a developmental disability and I was in an advocacy program through the Developmental Disabilities Council of Oklahoma called Partners in Policymaking when I first heard about AF. The former executive director was also in the class, and as she talked about the organization. I was surprised to hear that it was in Norman! I am a Normanite and had never heard of Among Friends. I immediately asked to take a tour. From the moment I walked into Among Friends, I knew I was somewhere incredible. They were looking for a program director and I applied. I worked in that position for 18 months before becoming executive director in June 2019.
How to Contribute
Last year, volunteers donated more than 900 hours to our organization because, like us, they recognize the social impact and significance of our organization. Most of us are clawing at the walls after just a short period of social isolation—many adults with developmental disabilities are regularly challenged with this throughout their lives. Now, our mission is louder than ever: being connected to our commUNITY is vital for everyone.
Our biggest need is financial support from the community to help us remain sustainable during this time. We are asking that people commit to monthly giving. Whether it is $5 or $50, your support is appreciated. Let's "spread Friendship, not germs" as we weather this storm together.
Long-term Goals
We are hoping to get our own transportation so that we can be out and about in the community more often. Members enjoy our Learning and Leadership program activities, including outreach and volunteering.
Pandemic’s Effects
Currently, our center is closed due to COVID19, but Among Friends is still going strong. We have spent the last few weeks doing virtual hangouts with members, parent/caregiver support meetings via zoom, photo challenges that the whole family can join in on and livestreams offering creative outlets, as well as health and wellness. We will be expanding this to include offline opportunities as we move forward toward a longer stretch of sheltering at home, including pen pals, one-to-one phone calls, and offering a member directory so that our families can be in contact with one another.
