For the fourth year, WifeSaver’s Furys Ferry location is serving its much-loved and in-demand peach ice cream sandwiches. Phillip Dukes, third generation family member to own and operate WifeSaver, pitched the idea of creating the sweet treats to his dad, Jamie, a few years ago. The response was even greater than he imagined.
“That first year, when we put the post out on Facebook, it blew up and went crazy,” shares Phil. “We set a date for when we were going to start selling them and that morning, we had people lined up out on the sidewalk.” Within a few weeks, the restaurant sold out of thousands of sandwiches. Each year since, the demand has continued to grow.
The combination of peach ice cream and vanilla sugar cookies is rooted in tradition and provides a flavor combination synonymous with Augusta. “We make the sugar cookies in-house and assemble them using the best peach ice cream we can find,” says Phil. “It’s a great combination. I enjoy them and my little girls love them even more!”
Fans will be excited to know that this year, the peach ice cream sandwiches will be available for more than just a few weeks this spring. “We will start selling them a few weeks before the tournament and will keep them all the way through the summer this year,” shares Phil.
In addition to getting the treats as singles, they have been requested as part of catering packages for events, parties, and weddings. “The big challenge is keeping them cold enough,” Phil explains. “For the wedding, we packed them in dry ice and that worked out well.”
Many customers pair the ice cream sandwiches with other popular spring favorites. “Right around the beginning of April, if somebody's coming in to get a peach ice cream sandwich, they're likely picking up our pimento cheese and egg salad as well,” he says. “WifeSaver has a lot of great menu items that we’re known for and I’m glad to be able to contribute to that tradition with this recent addition.”
