If the last few months of mercurial weather have caused unforeseen damage to your property, Ricky Heflin of Shelter Insurance on Wards Corner can help. An independent owner of this local Shelter Insurance office since January of 2022, Ricky has a few insights on the importance of an umbrella policy, no matter the season.

What exactly is an “umbrella policy”?
Ricky explains, “An umbrella policy offers extra liability coverage to better protect your assets—it basically goes above and beyond what your auto and homeowners’ liability limits are.”

Does everyone need one?
“Umbrella policies are a great policy for anyone, but especially those who have large investments, incomes, expensive assets,” he continues. “Anyone who has the potential to be financially harmed due to a liability claim.”

How exactly does an umbrella policy work?
“Say, for example, you get into an at-fault vehicle accident, severely injure someone and your auto policy’s liability limits are $250,000 per person and $500,000 aggregate—the most an insurance company would pay for that person’s injuries is $250,000 per person with a total cap of $500,000 per accident. If the liability claim is above the policy’s coverage amounts, you would be held personally liable and would have to pay for the excess out-of-pocket. If you have a $1 million umbrella policy, the two policies could provide $1.25–$1.5 million of liability coverage. The umbrella policy extends additional liability protection to your policies.”

*All coverage options are subject to the provisions of the policy purchased and details of the
policyholder’s situation.

What makes your office different than the rest?
“We offer great claims, amazing service, and the best insurance agent this side of the Mississippi,” Ricky smiles. “Truth: my phone is always on. I try to explain things the best I can when it comes to helping people understand their options—getting them the correct policies and coverage for their situation. Although we’re new to Ohio, Shelter Insurance has been around since 1946.”
