Art All Around

A round-up of murals in the Northland

Iron District: This unique area is built out of shipping containers, and so the Iron District commissioned various local artists to paint them. The result is bright and funky art that brightens up this otherwise industrial neighborhood. 1599 Iron St., North Kansas City.

Power of the Titans: A new mural near the corner of 10th and Burlington in North Kansas City was painted by Andrei Krautsou. It highlights NKC’s relationship with the railroad and industrial history, and the blue line running through it represents the Missouri River.

Foundation of Kearney: This scene depicts Kearney in 1869 at its founding when a railroad line was built through the area. It also gives a nod to Jesse James, as Kearney is infamously the birthplace of the outlaw. 106 W. Washington St., Kearney.

Washington Street Walkway: The Kearney City Council teamed up with a local Girl Scout troop to turn this alley into a colorful photo destination, with a depiction of a Kearney postcard featuring Jesse James, plus murals of wings, butterflies and flowers. Find it in the 100 block of Washington St. in Kearney.

Photo Op Alley: Multiple murals grace the walls of this alley on Main Street in downtown Parkville, such as a large American flag and a pair of intricate wings made of up Parkville icons, like the train.

Lewis & Clark: Artist David McClain commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Lewis & Clark expedition with a mural at the corner of Mill and Water Streets in Liberty. You can find other murals in downtown Liberty, such as a colorful temporary construction wall at the corner of Kansas and Water Streets.

Weston History: A mural by Weston residents Maresa Fisher and Susan Grinlinton is still in progress at the New Deal Warehouse in Weston off of 273 Hwy, which depicts Weston’s history. The mural is a clever response to constant graffiti on the side of the building, which the warehouse’s owner wanted to cover. The artists worked on the mural for most of 2021 and it features Lewis and Clark, Ben Holladay, the tobacco industry, and steamboats.

School Pride: This Kearney bulldog at 101 S. Grove St in Kearney would be a great spot for senior photos. A large green dragon also graces the rest of the wall.
