Art can be described under many pretenses, and yet only the human body can feel the true intentions of why art truly exists in this world. Art evokes emotion and impacts people in a progressive way, while allowing the artist to choose the medium to do this through. Summer Van Engen displays her art through her unique and advanced bodywork she performs at her local business she owns called Art & Science Healing in south Austin.
Dr. Summer initially went to chiropractic school because it just made sense to her she says. She was interested in healthcare, but extremely uninterested in traditional medicine. It seemed like there was enough of that available and still, no one was getting any healthier.
She grew up in a small town where traditional American medicine and chiropractic were really the only forms of healthcare. She had been told since she was 12 that there was something special about her touch and around the same time she had become aware of this as well.
Chiropractic school was actually a rude awakening where she learned all the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the body, but she was taught only to treat back, neck, and other minor joint or nerve issues. She started studying acupuncture at that point in order to learn the things she wanted to learn in the first place - digestive, emotional, improving energy levels, and improving the immune system. She stated that her acupuncture classes helped develop her ability to "see" the points that needed treating, and it was where she first realized she could feel tiny changes in heat coming off the body. She graduated first in her doctoral class with a certification that also allowed her to practice acupuncture.
Dr. Summer's specialty is helping people with the simple (not so simple) things like migraines, TMJ, chronic neck/back pain, frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis, etc. as well as complicated, chronic, neurological or digestive problems. She stated, "I love having sessions sometimes when a person just wants to get really chill, turn into jelly, and then get all put back together with better alignment and energy."
She now uses cutting-edge electrotherapy, Advanced Massage Techniques, Chiropractic, and Craniosacral to heal her clients. One technology she uses is a tiny electrical device meant to rejuvenate the skin and reduce wrinkles. It's supposed to be microcurrent (electricity in the range of one millionth of an ampere). She learned about microcurrent from her acupuncture instructor and a book he recommended - The Body Electric by Robert Becker. It's still one of her favorite books she says. Robert Becker was an orthopedic surgeon, who in the 50s and 60s was doing research on wound healing. Dr. Summer stated that the theory was if we could figure out what makes a salamander regenerate its missing limb, we might be able to recreate that in humans. Using microcurrent as a signal, he could make a frog regenerate an amputated limb. It's less successful in humans, but powerful nonetheless. There are microcurrent devices on the market for use in acupuncture, wound healing, bone healing, pain control, and esthetics, but Dr. Summer says there are fakes on the market.
Her deep Google dive kept bringing up other energy medicine modalities - some of which she had also incorporated into her own practice called Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM).
Dr. Summer stated that FSM is FDA approved to treat pain. Clinically, it has tremendous impact throughout the body and is a great adjunct to many other therapies. She stated that central pain syndrome is an issue when the middle of the brain gets so inflamed that it causes constant pain. Even narcotics sometimes can't reduce that pain, but FSM does. It relieves pain from old scarring, injuries to the nervous system, torn tissues, trauma, and even unresolved emotions.
She feels rewarded by watching her client's reactions when their pain is suddenly gone. she recently worked on a 5 year old case of shingles. As soon as she turned on the first machine, her client's pain was gone. She stated her client was confused. That's a normal reaction when an old pain goes away that past says Dr. Summer.
"People blink and their eyes search the room. It's funny because they are actually looking for the pain."
Her comprehensive approach restores order and removes stress to get her clients out of pain and performing at their best with fewer visits.
