Joanne Grimm, Owner and Artist of Joanne’s Garden Whimsy
As a former elementary school teacher, I made it a priority to include art throughout the curriculum. Now that I am retired, art is not only a priority for me, but a necessity! I am a self-taught artist and have been creating mandalas for over 7 years. I began painting as a way of helping me navigate my cancer journey. With that phase of my life behind me, I now have the privilege of sharing my love of this colorful and meditative art form through teaching mandala painting classes in my home studio.
In the 4 years I’ve been teaching painting, my students continue to be my inspiration to grow as an artist and explore new designs and techniques. With the success of my own classes, I regularly invite local guest artists to teach workshops at my studio to share their creative talents with my students, truly making it a supportive community of one another.
As a member of the Buenaventura Art Association in Ventura, I am part of an amazing network of artists who challenge me to try new things, in turn, sharing with them the art of mandala painting. I encourage everyone to make art a part of their daily self-care practice, letting go of the idea of making it perfectly and learning to enjoy the process. Kathy Somers, Kathy’s Moss Art
I became passionate about creating moss art after a home remodel. Since then, I can’t stop making new one-of-a-kind designs because it’s challenging. I also love bringing nature into so many people’s homes (without the work of a plant). This unique art is touchable and adds beauty for years. Becoming an artist allows me to give back—I donate 30% of my sales to three local charities: Raising Hope, Able Arts Work, and Shelter Hope. @kathysmossart
Sandra Stevens, Blue Elly Designs
When I started out sewing in my 20s, I started making quilts and after seeing how taking some simple cotton fabrics and creating a beautiful piece of art, I was hooked. After many years of quilting, I found minky fabric and all the wonderful blankets and stuffed animals that can be made for children to enjoy. Every year I find something new to add to my sewing experience. For me, it is a creative outlet that is a large part of my everyday life.
