Athletes at High Altitude

It doesn’t matter if you’re an ultramarathoner or a weekend warrior - our thin air creates challenges for everyone pushing their limits

Ask any athlete in Colorado what one of the most basic elements of maintaining performance and health at high altitude is, and they will answer hydration.

According to the Wilderness Medical Society, your body loses water twice as fast at high altitude as at sea level. The dehydration culprits are increased respiration due to lack of oxygen and rapid moisture evaporation from the skin's surface due to lower air pressure.

Jessica Hackney is a local hydration expert. As the owner of Hydrate IV Bar in Highlands Ranch, Hackney has years of experience assisting clients in determining the best services to improve wellness.

“We see a lot of athletes in the spa before a big race or athletic event. The benefits of getting a liter of saline plus the vitamins and nutrients to help with endurance and recovery is a piece of the puzzle when looking to maximize performance,” she says.

Information and details on Hydrate IV Bar’s services are available at highlandsranchhydrateivbar.com. Here, Hackney provides a list of three of her recommended and most popular IVs for performance, endurance and recovery.

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE IV COCKTAIL

b-complex, glutathione, magnesium, calcium

This IV therapy infusion is a favorite with fitness fans and athletes of all kinds. With one liter of saline inside every one of Hydrate IV Bar’s IVs, any signature cocktail will replenish fluids lost during a workout. And, as a bonus, the power-packed nutrient combination in this bag has been known to aid in endurance and accelerate muscle recovery.

MYERS COCKTAIL IV

b-complex, b12, b5, b6, calcium, magnesium, vitamin c, zinc

Also known as the “kitchen sink” IV, The Myers Cocktail is named after Baltimore physician John Myers. It is hugely popular among IV therapy spas across the United States.

NAD+ IV and NAD+ INJECTION SERVICES

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a coenzyme found in all living cells. It is essentially vitamin B3 broken down into its most usable form, and when infused, it goes directly to your cells, creating energy at the cellular level.

Jessica Hackney, BSN, RN, CCRN

Hackney's experience includes 16 years as an ICU nurse. At Hydrate IV Bar she ensures services are provided in a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere without sacrificing the professionalism of a medical office.
