Balancing School and Life

Academics Plus Offers Support for Helping Students Manage Academics, Activities, and Personal Time Successfully

As the school year begins, students often find themselves pulled in many directions at once. Between full class schedules, homework, sports practices, club meetings, part-time jobs, volunteer commitments, family responsibilities, and social activities, it can quickly become difficult to manage everything well. While extracurricular activities are an important part of a student’s growth—helping build confidence, leadership, teamwork, discipline, and friendships—academic success still requires intentional planning, consistent effort, and healthy time management.

“Everyone tends to be overscheduled these days,” says Stephanie Talley, Owner and Director of Academics Plus. “The demands on our time are much louder than they once were.” With so many commitments competing for attention, Talley encourages families to be thoughtful about how students spend their time. She emphasizes the importance of protecting both learning time and downtime, allowing students the opportunity to stay focused without feeling constantly overwhelmed.

Talley also recommends that families regularly evaluate priorities throughout the school year. As schedules change and responsibilities increase, it is important to ask whether each activity still supports the student’s overall well-being and goals. Academic time should be scheduled with the same importance as sports practices, music lessons, rehearsals, games, or club meetings. When studying becomes part of the routine rather than something squeezed in at the last minute, students are more likely to feel prepared, confident, and in control.

Strong study habits are one of the most effective ways students can create balance. Spending even a few minutes each day reviewing notes, organizing assignments, preparing for upcoming tests, or asking questions about difficult material can make a significant difference over time. This steady approach helps students retain information, avoid stressful cramming, and build the confidence needed to participate fully in class. Small, consistent efforts often lead to stronger academic results and less anxiety.

Academic support can also play an important role in helping students manage busy schedules. When families make tutoring, enrichment, or guided study time part of a student’s weekly rhythm, it provides structure and accountability. Students gain tools to work more efficiently, understand challenging concepts, and develop problem-solving skills that extend beyond a single subject. Parents also gain peace of mind knowing their child has support in place before struggles become overwhelming.

For 35 years, Academics Plus has helped students balance academic growth with the demands of extracurricular activities. Their approach supports students in staying on track while also helping them avoid burnout. Through meaningful and rigorous learning experiences, Academics Plus encourages students to question, problem-solve, persist, and grow in confidence. By helping students build strong academic foundations and healthy learning habits, Academics Plus equips them to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

“Learning deserves a place on the calendar just like sports, music lessons, and social events. When academics become part of a family’s routine, students gain confidence, independence, and long-term success,” says Stephanie Talley, Owner/Director.
