While 2025 National Beauty and Barber Week will be observed Sept. 8-14, every day is a perfect time to celebrate barber services in Murfreesboro at What's New Salon & Barber, 412 Uptown Square.
As a family owned and operated business, launched by Steve and Sandy Haynes, and joined by their son, Nick, and daughter-in-law, Lindsey Haynes, they assist men with top haircuts and grooming styles. Specifically, they provide haircuts with shampoo, haircuts with beard care, beard trims and shaping, as well as gray blending.
"I’ve had a beard for 11 years, and have helped many clients shape and grow their beards out. The correct beard products and maintenance is key in growing out a beard," confirms Nick.
In fact, identifying the correct hair products that work with individual hair textures and styles is critical to achieve the desired looks overall that men are wanting, he adds.
From cuts to color, the stylists at What’s New Salon and Barber work diligently to stay on top of education and industry trends for men, women and kids. The team there have built a collaborative atmosphere while striving for excellence and making their clients feel truly comfortable.
Nick says all men are talking about tapers, including low- and mid- versions. A taper haircut for men is a hairstyle where the hair gradually shortens from the top of the head down to the sides and back, creating a smooth transition from longer hair on top to shorter hair at the neckline and around the ears. Fade haircuts, including tapers, reportedly gained prominence during the 1940s and 1950s due to military grooming standards. As soldiers returned from service, they brought these types of haircuts with them into civilian fashion.
"We're doing a lot of tapers paired with a messy look on top," Nick adds.
Regional and national trends in men's haircuts, as cited by industry sources, indicate interests also in embracing texture as well as natural hair movement; low maintenance/high style cuts; "bro flows;" defined curl cuts; modern pompadours; tapered afros; refined side parts; hybrid cuts with modern takes on classic looks; specialized beard shampoos; angular facial trims; clean beard grow-outs; eco-friendly products; client education; beard and mustache tailored grooming ascending into an art form; enhanced or elevated salon visits; barbershops becoming more of a community hub and conversation space; and advanced barbering tools with energy-efficiency or technology adding extra benefits.
He says he personalizes appointments with clients by taking time to determine exactly what they're wanting and not rushing to the next person. "This is why I enjoy working based on appointments. This way we have the time we need."
Nick believes their barbershop has a laid-back feel, but it’s also more of an upscale feeling as well. There’s a leather couch and bar stools to sit on while waiting for an appointment. "Country music will more than likely be playing in the background. And there's a TV and dart board to keep clients occupied while waiting."
What’s New Salon & Barber has been a staple of Murfreesboro for more than 45 years. Working in the industry since the late 1970s, Steve and Sandy have witnessed many changes in both hairstyles and how salons are owned and operated. Over the decades they found themselves continually expanding as their stylists, services and client lists grew. At one point, they oversaw two buildings including spa services. However, like many local companies, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused them to re-evaluate their business model and make a shift back to their core hair-related services.
Nick has been cutting hair since 2009. "I absolutely love what I do. It’s truly a family business! My son has started here this summer and plans to continue through the school year as well. He’s helping us clean up and sweep hair," he says. "We're thrilled to have him here with us. When we’re not at work we love to travel and go to car shows."
The group's full-service hair salon services clients in Murfreesboro, MTSU, Smyrna, LaVergne, Nashville, Manchester, Blackman, Woodbury, Lebanon, Franklin and Nolensville. In addition, they offer waxing, hair extensions, bridal speciality services and gift certificates. They have daily hours except for Sundays and Mondays.
The Haynes say their salon is widely known and respected for integrity, family values and strong commitment to education, a reputation of which they take pride.
