Nestled away from the busyness of town is one of Murfreesboro’s hidden gems: Barfield Crescent Park, which offers visitors a “state park feel” in the middle of the city.
At first glance from Veterans Parkway, it looks like a great city park with ballfields, playgrounds, walking trails and pavilions. But on a closer look, Barfield Crescent Park is more than that within its 500-plus acres. The front 100 acres encompasses the traditional feel of a city park, but it’s in the back 400 acres that a certain magic happens.
The magic, according to Amanda Rodriguez, facility coordinator of the Wilderness Station, is in the remaining 400 acres that includes the Wilderness Station and about 5 miles of winding, scenic trails. The paved 1.5-mile path is perfect for leisurely walks, strollers and pets. The other 3.5 miles are unpaved and filled with dirt trails, hills and some breathtaking views.
“It’s a privilege working at Barfield Crescent Park each day; it’s the best kept secret in Murfreesboro! The access to the river and amazing trails that wind through the forest and grasslands truly allow us to bring the park to life for the various environmental education programs we host for the public,” says Amanda.
The educational aspect is unmatched with award-winning programing offered at the Wilderness Station and through Outdoor Murfreesboro for all ages, abilities and levels of interest.
Animal Ambassadors, such as turtles, snakes and birds of prey, always are a hit, as is the annual Hummingbird Festival. The festival offers fun and unique shopping vendors while showcasing the education of hummingbirds and bird-banding, which visitors get to witness in real-time.
Parks team members also work hard to provide new and unique opportunities that allow the community to experience outdoor life. This includes an on-site campground where staff lead hikes for cookouts, storytelling and s’mores, night hikes and even offers an overnight camping event to help those just beginning. Throw in all the garden tours, natural resources exhibits, kayak trips and cave exploring, and there’s always something special happening.
For those who know and have experienced Barfield Crescent Park firsthand, they indicate it's one of their favorite places to enjoy in Murfreesboro. It’s relaxing, beautiful and truly has something for everyone. The landscape is constantly changing through the seasons, and it’s never quite the same park twice.
“Once you visit Barfield Crescent Park, you’ll quickly become a 'regular' — learning a lot about Tennessee along the way,” shares Amanda Rodriguez.
