Is there a bear chasing you? Probably not, but you may feel like it.

Our sympathetic nervous system, also known as the “fight, flight or freeze” aspect of our nervous system, takes over when our stress levels are high. This aspect of the nervous system is helpful when there is indeed a bear chasing us. But too often we live with sympathetic nervous dominance while simply performing our normal daily routines.

When this part of our nervous system is taking control, the body shifts away from the “rest and digest” functions of the parasympathetic nervous system. Over time, this imbalance causes a stress response that leads to depletion and chronic disease. Therefore, it is useful to find “coherence” between the sympathetic and parasympathetic sides of the nervous system, whereby the two work together to create balance for the healthy functioning of the mind, body, and spirit.

One of the most tangible and practical ways to influence coherence within the nervous system is to practice gratitude. Gratitude is not only recognized to achieve calmness but also has been shown to strengthen our mental capabilities and be a source of motivation.

Wondering where to start? Try this simple exercise first thing in the morning before launching your day: Sit comfortably and gently close your eyes. Take a calm, deep, and cleansing breath. Repeat the breath until you notice your body is feeling more relaxed. Bring your attention to that for which you are grateful. Recognize gratitude for your heart beating, your lungs supplying your body with oxygen, and your body’s ability to move through space. Find gratitude for the safety your shelter provides, them food that nourishes your body, and for the beauty you find in nature. Shift your thinking to those who you love. One by one, feel in your heart the gratitude you have for each person you value in your life.

Imagine the gratitude as a bright light, filling each cell of your body from your toes to the top of your head. Notice the calmness illuminating your body. Remember you can revisit this moment at any time throughout the day or night.
