When the curtain rises, the real world fades away as the spotlight shines on the Porter High School (PHS) theater students, taking the stage to captivate audiences one scene at a time. But this moment is not just for the actors. For every member of the PHS theater department, this is the time when months of hard work behind the scenes, creating sets, and practicing lines come together, transforming the previously bare stage into a community's magical production.
Behind every great school production, students collaborate to bring their shared visions to life through combined talents, passions, and teamwork. Bringing characters to life one role at a time is Dominic Kelley, the PHS Fine Arts Department Theater Teacher. Mr. Kelley aims to provide a space where students can be themselves, feel safe, and overcome their fears, while inspiring them to never give up. With his coaching and guidance, students find unity in their all-hands-on-deck mentality, seeking support from faculty, parental volunteers, local businesses, and sponsors to build set designs, assemble costumes, rehearse musical numbers, and prepare for the final call of "lights, camera, action!"
PHS Senior Esteban Fernando Saucedo channeled his inner Andrew Garfield throughout his audition, incorporating the star’s dynamic characteristics and reactions into the unspoken language of theater. Esteban and his classmates learn the value of time management early on as they juggle schoolwork and rehearsals, driven by their love for the theater program. Theater also teaches resilience, collaboration, and how to handle pressure with grace—skills that apply not only to the stage but to every area of their lives.
For every dramatic entrance on stage, there is an equally unforgettable exit. The plays are transformed from school productions into something even bigger—a community celebration.
