Beyond Real Estate

Championing Families, Philanthropy, and Small-Town Charm in the Santa Ynez Valley

Kelly Mahan Herrick, a partner of the Calcagno & Hamilton Real Estate Group of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, exemplifies what it means to “love local.” Through her professional expertise, philanthropic spirit, and dedication to family, Kelly has become a cornerstone of the SYV community, creating a legacy of connection and care.

Kelly’s journey in real estate began over a decade ago in Santa Barbara, where she honed her skills in marketing and writing for one of the region’s top real estate teams, which she is still a part of today. Her transition to the SYV marked a pivotal moment, as she discovered a calling that went beyond buying and selling homes. “One of my favorite demographics to work with is young families moving from Santa Barbara,” Kelly shares. “I love helping them sell their homes there and find their dream homes here. Buellton, in particular, excites me; it’s an up-and-coming community with its vibe and culture, perfect for families.”

Her work is fueled by a passion for showcasing the area’s charm and quality of life. “I love driving clients around, discussing schools, pointing out clean parks, and highlighting the serene views and property values,” Kelly explains. “It’s about helping them envision a life here—a quieter, more relaxed way of living.”

As a mother and leader, Kelly fosters opportunities for local families to connect and thrive. The Facebook group she founded, Santa Ynez Valley Moms, has become a hub for over 1,000 members to discuss family life in the area. “It’s been amazing to see playgroups, book clubs, and even homeschooling pods form from this group,” she says.

Kelly has also organized impactful initiatives like toy swaps, school supplies, and food drives. One of her most memorable moments was a food drive in Buellton that collected nearly a thousand pounds for SYV Community Outreach. “The generosity of my neighbors was overwhelming,” Kelly reflects. “It reaffirmed why I love this community so much. We’re a tight-knit group of people genuinely caring for one another.”

Her dedication to giving back extends into local schools, where she serves on the Oak Valley Elementary PTSA, working to enhance the educational experience for local children. She also contributes to the Santa Ynez Association of Realtors MLS Committee, ensuring the area’s real estate market remains accessible.

As a resident of the Valley, Kelly has witnessed its growth and evolution. Since the pandemic, Buellton has become a haven for young families and first-time homebuyers, drawn by the combination of affordability and lifestyle. “Buellton has seen a demographic shift, with more families recognizing the value of living here,” Kelly notes. “With larger homes and outdoor spaces at more reasonable prices, it’s an idyllic place to raise children while enjoying a rural charm and small-town vibe.”

Balancing a demanding career with her philanthropic efforts and family life might seem daunting, but Kelly thrives on the flexibility her profession provides. “No two days are ever the same, and that’s what I love,” she says. “This flexibility allows me to be present for my daughter and include her in my volunteer efforts, whether it’s shopping for school supplies or helping with food drives. It’s a way of instilling values in her while contributing to the community.”

Looking ahead, Kelly is eager to continue her work both in real estate and in the community. Her plans include hosting a spring picnic in Buellton, another food drive in the fall, and other volunteer opportunities as they arise. She encourages others to get involved as well, offering this advice: “Find a cause that brings you joy. Supporting organizations like SYV Community Outreach has been deeply fulfilling for me, especially knowing how much they help families in need.”

For Kelly, “loving local” is not just a philosophy but a way of life. As a real estate agent, she sees her role as one of stewardship, ensuring the community continues to thrive. “My livelihood depends on the quality of the community,” she explains. “Being involved keeps me informed, connected, and in a position to share what makes this Valley so special with prospective buyers.”

Her dedication to the valley extends to supporting its local businesses and vendors in her business. Her husband Jason Herrick owns a specialty wine and liquor store in Montecito; together, they champion the importance of shopping locally, recognizing its role in sustaining the area’s economic and cultural vibrancy.

Through her work, philanthropy, and advocacy, Kelly Mahan Herrick demonstrates how one person’s passion and dedication can enrich an entire community. Her efforts serve as a testament to the profound impact of loving local and making a difference where it matters most.
