CrDesigner Bibhu Mohapatra drew inspiration from early twentieth-century theatrical figures for his Spring/Summer 2027 collection. Presented during New York Fashion Week, the 46-look show paid tribute to Marchesa Luisa Casati, the Italian heiress and muse who turned her entire existence into performance art. Mohapatra described the collection as an homage to a woman who treated the world as her canvas and its cultures as her palette.eate an article.
A Study in Texture, Color and Contrast
One element that stood out was the juxtaposition of different fabrics across many looks. Feathers appeared on hems, shoulders and trains throughout the collection. Lace was paired with leather. Tailored jackets were paired with sheer blouses. This idea also extended to how the pieces were presented on the runway. Evening gowns walked alongside relaxed separates. It was as if we were peering into an eccentric fashionista's closet.
Color told its own story. Colors ranged from pink, blush and ivory before deepening into olive green and mustard gold. Bibhu also incorporated denim, offering a nice counterpoint to all the lace and eveningwear. Together, the collection had an almost sophisticated bohemian quality.

Mohapatra showed some bold eveningwear designs. Full skirts, sculpted shoulders, embroidered tulle and sweeping gowns added real drama to the runway. These were statement pieces, perhaps the clearest link back to Casati herself. Mohapatra described the collection as centered on women who understand dressing as a form of sovereignty and craft as a form of power.
Washington Connection and Why It Matters
Mohapatra has a notable tie to the capital through former First Lady Michelle Obama, who wore his designs on several high-profile occasions. She chose one of his pieces for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Phoenix Awards Dinner in Washington in September 2014. She wore a look from his Spring 2015 collection when she arrived in India alongside President Barack Obama in January 2015.
That connection feels especially timely this season. For Potomac’s fashion-minded crowd, Mohapatra’s Spring 2027 collection offers inspiration and makes the case that occasion dressing does not require playing it safe. With gala season underway, consider a dramatic silhouette, a touch of feathers, rich textures or unexpected fabric combinations to make your evening look feel more personal.
