Highland Village resident Juliet Urushima started Bluet SUP (Stand Up Paddle boarding) in 2015 at Pilot Knoll Park, but her love affair with paddle boarding started years earlier when she lived in San Antonio and lost her mother.  Two days after her mother’s funeral, Juliet found herself driving to Austin after seeing an ad for the sport. Being on the water helped her grieve and challenged her to try something new – to move forward.

Before long Juliet was carpooling friends to paddle boarding and competing in recreational races from Tahoe to Michigan and all over Texas.  Eventually she started teaching others how to get out on the water and find peace for personal struggles and enjoyment in nature. A move to Highland Village did not quell her love for paddle boarding – she kept right on going in her new backyard.

Juliet explains there are many benefits to Stand Up Paddle boarding – one is that it is a very fun form of exercise.  Juliet says, “The average person can burn up to 600 calories per hour with casual paddling.  You can make it as tough or easy as you want!”   It is a great opportunity to be social with your “gang” or meet new friends as a variety of classes and special events are offered at Bluet SUP.  You will often find Chef Michael Scott from The Bartonville Store whipping up delicious food at these special events which adds a flavorful and fun dimension to these unique outings.

Paddle boarding is also very cathartic for those needing a release from stress or personal struggles.  Peacefully floating on the water watching a sunrise or sunset helps to reset us.  Juliet notes, “I find a lot of people come off the water their first time feeling extremely happy.”

The great thing about Stand Up Paddle boarding is that anyone can participate regardless of skill.  However, Juliet notes that depending on your athletic ability one should always be aware of the weather.  Higher winds make paddle boarding challenging for beginners.  Juliet especially enjoys helping fuller figured guests understand they can paddle board as she once was 125 pounds overweight herself.  Kids under 13 may require some special procedures but she can walk you through this process.  All in all, Juliet and the team at Bluet SUP are ready to guide you and your family to a new, incredible experience on the water that may very well become a life affirming passion and habit.
