There is a certain kind of person who leaves a place and makes it proud. Mike Burr is that kind of person.
Born and raised in Norman, Mike grew up in the long shadow of a university — which in this part of Oklahoma is not a burden but a gift. His father, David A. Burr, served for many years as a Vice President at the University of Oklahoma, and his fingerprints on that institution run deep. In 1961, at the direction of OU President George Lynn Cross, David Burr established the President's Leadership Class — a freshman scholarship program designed to identify Oklahoma's most promising young leaders and keep them rooted in the state they called home. More than six decades later, the program is still going strong, having shaped thousands of Sooners into some of Oklahoma's most accomplished citizens.
It would be easy to say the apple didn't fall far from the tree. But in Mike's case, the apple rolled all the way to Wall Street — and still found its way back to its roots.
Mike attended Norman High School, graduating in 1982. He was a basketball player, the kind of kid who understood competition, teamwork, and what it means to show up every day and put in the work. When it came time for college, there was never really a question about where he was headed. He enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, where he joined Delta Tau Delta fraternity and — in a moment that must have carried particular meaning for his family — was selected as a recipient of the very scholarship his father had founded. To be chosen for the President's Leadership Class is a distinction. To be chosen for a program your own father built is something else entirely.
Mike graduated from OU in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Finance, with honors.
What came next was a career that would have looked ambitious on paper and proved even more impressive in practice. Mike joined JPMorgan, one of the most storied financial institutions in the world and spent more than two decades there — eventually rising to Managing Director, overseeing multiple regional offices and significant financial divisions. It is the kind of tenure that speaks not just to talent, but to trust. You don't last twenty-plus years at JPMorgan by accident.
From there, Mike continued to build. He served as Executive Director and Vice Chairman at Challenger Capital Group, providing investment banking services to middle market companies. He moved on to Fifth Third Securities as Group Senior Managing Director and Head of Mergers and Acquisitions. Today, he serves as Senior Managing Director and Head of the Central Region at East West Bank, where he leads the firm's presence across Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin/San Antonio, delivering what the bank calls "Bridge Banking" — connecting U.S. businesses to international markets and opportunity.
It is a career defined by the ability to see around corners, to bring people and capital together, and to build something lasting. Those are, when you think about it, exactly the skills his father modeled at the University of Oklahoma all those years ago.
Yet, no matter how high his professional star rose, Mike’s heart remained firmly anchored to his hometown. He frequently credits his success to the foundation laid right here in Cleveland County.
"OU holds a special place in our hearts, and it prepared me for a successful career in financial services," Mike reflects.
True to his roots, Mike has consistently looked for ways to lift up the next generation. Whether mentoring young professionals or generously giving back to his alma mater to support future business leaders, his career is defined as much by his generosity as it is by his financial success.
Through all of it — the moves, the markets, the milestones — Mike has had Jan, formerly Jan Johnson by his side. The two have been married for forty years this summer, an achievement that in today's world deserves its own standing ovation. Together they raised three children: Haley, Riley, and Charlie.
That is the story of Mike Burr in broad strokes. Norman produced him. OU shaped him. And a career built on integrity, relationships, and hard-nosed financial expertise carried him to the upper ranks of American investment banking.
