Brad Mitchell’s heart was pounding and his mouth was dry. He was readying for a standup paddleboard race in Clear Lake when one of the female competitors uttered something that rendered him speechless.

“I said, ‘nice board,’” says Konae Mitchell, who raced that day.

Brad, an experienced attorney who never had a problem speaking his mind, suddenly couldn’t form a word. Captivated by her presence, Brad panicked and grunted awkwardly. It was the last interaction the two would have until the finish line where Brad at last found his words.

“We started talking and it was like I had known him all my life,” Konae says.

That was five years ago. Today, the couple, now married and living in Bridgeland, coach a standup paddleboard class together and enjoy making YouTube videos about vegetarian cooking. They also run The Mitchell Group, a successful real estate firm where bringing joy to others is key.

“We want to spread the joy of homeownership,” Brad says. “We want everything to be smooth and calm. Whether you’re getting a check to put in your retirement account or making the largest investment of your life.”

Brad and Konae each use their personal expertise to service clients. Brad, an accomplished real estate lawyer, explains legal documents for buyers or sellers, while Konae, an experienced luxury realtor, helps clients sell their home or find one that suits their lifestyle.

“Our clients have told us they get the biggest kick out of having an attorney for the price of a real estate agent,” Konae says, laughing.

But the two share more than a zeal for real estate. They are vibrant conversationalists and like to say they are truly each other’s soulmates. Healthy living is a priority, and the two put their energy into paddleboarding and eating a plant-based diet. They’ve paddled their way around the country, from Key West to California, both for fun and elite training. It’s an exercise that activates all muscle groups, burns calories and gets people out in nature.

“Our goal is to be 90-something years old holding hands and walking on the beach,” Konae says. “In order to do that we need to be healthy.”
