We’ve all been there—scrolling through jaw-dropping before-and-after photos of major renovations, tempted to transform our own spaces into the latest Instagram-worthy masterpiece. But let’s face it, not every home (or budget) is built for an extreme makeover. And that’s okay.
Sometimes, the most magical transformations are those that honor the character of a space while breathing fresh life into it. Renovations don’t have to wield a wrecking ball to make an impact. There’s a certain charm, even poetry, in reviving what’s already there and allowing the original beauty to shine through.
This philosophy guided my recent project in Dripping Springs, where a Mediterranean-style home with exquisite architectural details begged for a kitchen update, one that respected its history while elevating its function and aesthetic.
Balancing Old and New
When I first walked into the home, I was immediately struck by its intricate wood trim and craftsmanship. The natural warmth and elegance of these details couldn’t be ignored. It was clear that this renovation wasn’t about erasing the past; it was about enhancing it.
The journey began with the cabinetry. The original wood finish flowed seamlessly with the home’s trim, so instead of replacing it, we opted to refinish it with a satin stain, preserving its connection to the rest of the house. From there, we tackled the kitchen’s more dated elements, like the oversized travertine range hood and green granite countertops, which made the space feel dark and heavy rather than the light, airy chef’s kitchen the homeowner envisioned.
The Transformation
Our first design decision set the tone: Taj Mahal leathered quartzite countertops. Their soft, creamy texture not only modernized the space but also added a luxurious, yet understated, feel. To create visual continuity, we extended the quartzite up the walls as a backsplash, which immediately made the kitchen feel clean, cohesive, and elegant.
We squared off the island to emphasize clean lines and redesigned a custom dry bar with dual beverage refrigerators for a stylish, functional addition—perfect for entertaining. Mixed metals played a starring role in the design: We introduced brushed gold knobs and pulls for the cabinetry and selected oversized island pendants with clear glass shades to keep the space feeling light.
The pièce de résistance was the custom mixed-metal range hood, which became the stunning focal point of the space. Its steel construction introduced a subtle industrial edge, perfectly balanced by the softness and warmth of thoughtful details like brushed gold hardware and the quartzite’s rich, natural tones.
To complete the transformation, we refreshed the walls and ceiling with a brighter, creamier white, replacing the former beige tones. It’s proof that you should never underestimate the power of paint. This simple change brought the entire room to life, making it feel bright, airy, and entirely refreshed.
Sustainability Meets Style
One of the joys of this project was showing that updates don’t always need to be dramatic or cost prohibitive. By preserving elements like the cabinetry and wood trim, we embraced a more sustainable approach while respecting the home’s history. Whether it’s a bold centerpiece like a range hood or subtle details like glass pendants, every design choice worked together to create a space that’s as functional as it is beautiful.
A Renovation Philosophy
This kitchen reminds us that renovation isn’t about chasing trends or reinventing the wheel. It’s about honoring what makes a space unique and using thoughtful design to amplify its beauty.
