Build a Rain Garden with Fairlawn Medina Landscape Supply

Fairlawn Medina Landscape Supply is a local landscape supply that has been carrying products and offering services at affordable prices since 1956. It was originally founded as Fairlawn Peat Humus Supply, offering a rich stain of peat that was discovered and mined in West Akron. The business transitioned to Fairlawn Landscape Supply in the 1980s, and to Fairlawn Medina Landscape Supply in 2015 when the company came under new ownership.

Since opening in the 1950s, Fairlawn Medina Landscape has experienced exponential growth – transitioning from peat only to screened topsoil, blended soil, bio-soil, fill dirt, peat, various mulches, straw, grass seed, fertilizers, boulders, limestone, gravel, natural stone, drainage products, landscaping tools and much more.

One especially eco-friendly service that Fairlawn Medina Landscape offers is the construction of rain gardens. These gardens are a simple and effective tool that can be used to reduce stormwater runoff. Often, they are strategically placed to intercept pollutant-laden runoff until it can be fully absorbed in the ground.

Rain gardens are designed to act as a bowl, collecting stormwater runoff from downspouts and overflow land. Once collected in the rain garden, water is able to slowly infiltrate back into the soil. The great thing is, they have the same look as any other landscape bed but with the benefit of increased stormwater infiltration.

For optimal results, the depression for a rain garden should be about six to 18 inches deep and its soil should be a mixture that will allow for fast filtration of water. Often, around 50% stone aggregate or sand, 30% compost and 20% topsoil are recommended for a rain garden mixture because they allow for easy water percolation.

When it comes to choosing plants for your rain garden, Fairlawn Medina Landscape describes that you'll want to have hardy native plants that thrive in our ecosystem. In Northeast Ohio, New England Asters, Butterfly Weeds, Ohio Spiderwort, Brown Eyed Susans and Little Bluestems are great plants to utilize in a rain garden.

Once the rain garden is constructed, maintenance is simple. In the weeks following the planting, you'll want to remove any weeds until your plants are strong and healthy. Expect your rain garden to need monthly weeding during the first year's growing season. After that, it will need to be weeded once a year.

Annually, the rain garden will need new mulch for moisture retention and shrubs will need to be pruned. It is not necessary to water the rain garden unless the area is going through an extremely dry period, in which you'll want to water the rain garden several times a week until the dry period has passed.
