Building Community Through Play

The Heart of Gymboree Classes

At Gymboree Play & Music of Southlake, we believe that childhood is best experienced together. Our theme for February is all about building community: child-to-child, child-to-adult, and adult-to-adult. Socialization is such a large part of what we do—not only for children but also for the adults who join our classes looking to connect with others at the same stage of their parenting or caretaking journey. We welcome all loving adults - parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, babysitters/nannies/au pairs, teen/adult siblings, etc. The point is to have someone who will show children the attention and love they need to thrive.

The Science Behind Socialization

Research consistently highlights the importance of early social interactions for a child’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), engaging in play with peers helps children develop essential communication skills, emotional regulation, and problem-solving abilities. Likewise, Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child emphasizes that positive interactions with caregivers and peers lay the foundation for lifelong emotional well-being and resilience.

For parents and caregivers, community matters just as much. A study published in ‘Pediatrics’ found that parents who have strong social support networks experience lower stress levels, improved mental health, and a greater sense of confidence in their parenting abilities. Simply put, connection matters—for children and adults alike.

How Gymboree Play & Music Fosters Meaningful Connections

Our classes are designed with socialization at the core. Here’s how we help children and families build strong, supportive communities:

  • Child-to-Child Connections: Our play-based activities encourage children to engage with their peers, practice taking turns, and develop empathy—all in a fun and nurturing environment. These early friendships build social confidence and help children feel comfortable in group settings.

  • Child-to-Adult Bonds: Structured play between children and their caregivers strengthens attachment, a crucial component of emotional security. Engaging in activities together fosters trust and creates joyful shared experiences.

  • Adult-to-Adult Support: Parenting can sometimes feel isolating, but our classes bring together families in similar stages of life. Many parents form lasting friendships in our space, supporting each other through the joys and challenges of raising young children.
