As Mae Reedy Design + Build celebrates its upcoming 10th anniversary, we asked Mae to reflect on the phenomenal growth of her business. Happy repeat clients, a personalized approach, and the ability to fuse the worlds of beauty and functionality are all ingredients that help to create her secret sauce.
With experience garnered from working with her father’s construction and home design business when she was younger, Mae launched her company in 2015. She combines her passion for art with an intuitive touch that comes from working with diverse people and understanding their distinct needs.
When assisting homeowners, Mae’s expertise extends well beyond picking paint colors. As a licensed general contractor and designer, she manages every phase of construction—from structural work to finishing touches – ensuring each renovation is customized and completed with innovative design and top-notch craftsmanship.
“Some people want a break from the world when they return to their homes at the end of the day,” she reflects. “For example, we helped a stressed-out pediatric nurse find her bliss by redesigning her space. After working with sick children all day, she wanted to come home to ‘a vacation feel’ – a vacation with mountains, rocks, and the earth! We then created her bathroom to mimic a ski chalet, completely different from the rest of her house. Keeping communication open and clear with her was essential in creating the sanctuary-like space that allowed her to escape from her daily grind.”
Other homeowners’ priority may be maximizing the time spent with the family. “One of our clients was a single mom with two teens who she felt just didn't get enough time with. We changed the floor plan of her kitchen so that her kids had a front seat to where she cooked and served food on busy mornings. Her pain point was lack of time; we customized her design to allow for cozy breakfasts in a shared space before dashing out the door to work.”
Often, people mistakenly believe that upgrading or renovating your home has to be luxurious and expensive. But in reality, it’s about making your space work for you. “What looks perfect to one client, doesn’t for another,” she says.
For example, some families may prefer to balance the need for open play spaces for children with exquisite, fine dining areas, or incorporate grandparents’ heirlooms into a modern design. Whatever the case, any and all rooms should be seamlessly integrated to work together.
For others, minimizing maintenance is important in an era where often both parents are working and time is limited. Sourcing materials that come with durability and quality is just as important as the overall aesthetic of the home. Finishing touches such as hidden storage, layered lighting, or integrated technology help to inspire families to make living easy.
Building homes that children can grow in as they move from one phase of life to another is also a significant concern for many homeowners. “This sense of continuity is important to capture. Trends will come and go, but we make sure what we do is timeless. What we don’t want is clients feeling like they don’t belong in their home after just a few short years.”
Helping clients maneuver through tough times is also important, and “where renovation meets peace of mind” is a core pillar of the company. For example, “After a flood destroyed a family’s home in Preston Hollow, we embarked on a nine-month emotional and transformational journey as we put their house back together. Not only did we help them reconstruct their home, but we remained hands-on when it came to providing documentation for insurance companies. Paperwork can often overwhelm those already in the depths of a traumatic event.”
Mae leads a team of 12 talented women and is actively involved with the Interior Design Society (IDS)—she won Designer of the Year in 2024—and is also a member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). She envisions an eventual return to more traditional spaces in the future, including more character in lighting and hardware, styles like silhouettes (as opposed to minimalist “cold” designs), and greater personality in tiles. These kinds of details help homeowners to live in spaces that truly honor and serve them, and reflect their histories and priorities.
