As summer approaches, it is crucial to increase awareness about water safety and encourage safe practices in and around water during the summer months. Drowning prevention education for Boise families is crucial at this time. According to the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention, for kids under the age of four, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death, and for kids between the ages of four and fourteen, it's the second leading cause of death. What facts should be recalled so that you don't end up one of the victims?

Every kid should be able to have a carefree summer, and we can make that happen by spreading the word about the "ABCs of Water Safety." remarked Aqua-Tots Swim Schools' CEO Craig Wright.

  • Adult Supervision: Parents should never let their children who cannot swim alone. It's also important that they keep their attention on the older swimmers and not be sidetracked by anything, including phones, books, or pals.
  • Barriers: Fencing around swimming pools in backyards should include self-latching gates and locks. To prevent young children from accidentally drowning, families should also store away pool toys while they are not in use. Sixty-nine percent of children under the age of five who drowned were unsupervised at the time of the event, per data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission
  • Classes: It's important to start kids in a swim program as early as four months old and keep them there until they're competent and safe in the water. The National Institutes of Health found that formal swim instruction reduced the chance of drowning by 88% among children aged one to four.

Safeguarding lives and ensuring the well-being of people in and around water requires giving drowning prevention measures a first priority. We must all do our part to be alert, raise public consciousness, and take preventative measures against drowning in order to make water activities more secure for everyone. As a group, we have the power to save many lives from the tragedy of drowning.
