When George and Alicia Sboukis were approached with the opportunity to reopen an iconic restaurant location downtown, the decision was easy to make. Looking for the proper fit, the Sboukis family and their years and generations of experience in the metro Detroit culinary scene was a natural partnership with the legendary location.
"The Penobscot building management wanted to revitalize the Caucus Club restaurant. We were courted in 2016 and asked if we would be interested. I grew up in the restaurant business and knew the ins and outs of running a business and agreed with my brother to go off on my own. It was an amazing opportunity."
Originally opened in 1952, the Caucus Club was completely redesigned and reimagined in its 2017 reopening. Located in the heart of Detroit's financial district, it had a history of hosting prominent barons of industry, politicians, and celebrities. In the spring of 1961, an unknown Barbara Streisand launched her singing career on its stage.
"In a historic building location like the Penobscot, we wanted to keep a stylish and elegant Art Deco design restaurant, bar, and private space. Something that would be tailored for intimate dinners, larger groups, or private parties. The restaurant is drenched in history and lore."
History and design abound around a spacious bar, an elegant restaurant with live entertainment, and a dry age room for steaks and chops.
"We feature all USDA Prime steaks and chops, dry aged and butchered on site. Steaks are seared on a wood fired grill with oak and ash bringing mouthwatering flavor and tenderness. Caesar salad is always prepared tableside, as well as seasonal dessert selections. Seafood and eclectic dishes round out the seasonally adjusted menu, focusing on local ingredients. The wine list is exclusive and extensive to pair with any dish."
The Caucus Club restaurant is currently abiding by the closure restrictions from the Governor of Michigan, but normally open lunch, cocktail hours, and dinner.
