Celebrating 100 Years with Sig Cox

Owner Jeff Miller shares about the company’s lasting success through service, value, and consistency

After moving to Augusta with his wife, Suzi, in 1990, Jeff Miller spent the next three decades thriving in his career with Club Car and Ingersoll Rand. When Jeff began planning his next career move, he and Suzi turned their attention to local business opportunities. “We wanted a service business, something in the trades, and we wanted a business that had a good name and longevity to it but also had room for growth,” shares Jeff. “We were looking for a company that already provided quality service knowing we could continue to build on what they had done and expand opportunities in the future.”

Sig Cox Heating & Air Conditioning, which has been servicing the CSRA since 1926, was a perfect fit and the Millers took ownership of the company in 2022. Since then, Jeff has enjoyed the challenge of taking the business to the next level. “So many people knew the name Sig Cox but they didn't know if we were a residential service company, a commercial service company, or a construction company. We're actually all three of those,” explains Jeff. “We do as much residential as we do commercial and we have a large commercial construction unit as well.”

Sig Cox has an expansive service area, which includes locations in both Georgia and South Carolina, including Columbia and Beaufort. “We also own Beaufort Air Condition,” says Jeff. “It's part of our business family and we have a pretty good presence down in the Beaufort area. People from here may have a house in the Beaufort area but not realize that we're connected.” Having a business presence in Beaufort also allows the company to take on projects and jobs up and down the coast from Savannah to Charleston.

An enduring legacy of Sig Cox is that as the team works to install, repair, and maintain both residential and commercial heating and air conditioning units, they do it under the core values of providing excellent customer service, value, and consistency. “I’ve always felt that excellent customer service is something that can set your company apart from everybody else,” says Jeff. “I'm a consumer of goods and services and know how I want to be treated, so we really want to make sure that our customer service is second to none.”

Great customer service begins with ensuring that when customers call Sig Cox, they get a real person answering the phone every time. Employees monitor calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including Jeff who participates in the on-call rotation. That initial contact lays the foundation for intentional communication with customers which includes letting them know when a technician is on the way, along with a photo and information about the technician.

The Sig Cox commitment to value and consistency shows through stable maintenance pricing over the years, not charging credit card fees, and assessing each system individually to deliver tailored solutions instead of one-size-fits-all services.

Sig Cox kicked off celebrating 100 years with a new anniversary logo and hundred-year marketing campaign. Other celebrations will include an opportunity for customers to share their stories through social media and engage in a contest that will take them on adventures all around the CSRA. Sig Cox will also continue to give back to the community through partnerships with Habitat for Humanity and the Lennox company’s “Feel the Love” campaign, which selects a few local homeowners to receive a free heating and cooling unit through a nomination process.

“Augusta has given us so much and we want to say a big thank you to everyone,” shares Jeff. “It is humbling to be entering into our fifth year of owning the company and we have a responsibility to the Haney and Cox families, who we purchased it from, to make sure Sig Cox survives for another hundred years.”
