A game that dates back to nineteenth-century China has recently grown in popularity in the Cypress community. Acting as both an intellectually stimulating pastime and a social outlet, residents are seeking out Mahjong more than ever. Michelle Tinney, a local Mahjong event coordinator and teacher, says the biggest misconception about Mahjong is that “most people believe it’s simply a matching game that can be found on an app.” In reality, it is a complex game with different regional variations as a result of Mahjong spreading worldwide over the years.
The game’s growing popularity stems from the welcoming community. Mahjong players create a space for genuine connection by inviting friends, family, and anyone interested in it. Whether playing for leisure or competitively, there is a place for everyone to enjoy the game.
American Mahjong is a “four-player game with 152 tiles that each have their own names and complicated rule system guided by a standard annual card,” explains Tinney. In order to win, one has to collect the right pairs and groups of matching tiles before their opponents do. Throughout the game, tiles are passed around and discarded as everyone searches for the right combinations. Players must simultaneously collect discarded tiles for their own matches while blocking others from doing so. Having a sharp memory is crucial for using offensive and defensive strategies to secure needed tiles.
Where to Start
From an outsider’s perspective, Mahjong can appear intimidating, leading many to become discouraged before even starting. “It is often referred to as learning a new language,” Tinney notes. Before joining organized events, it is highly recommended for beginners to have a formal lesson to become familiar with the basics. Whether taught by a friend or an American Mahjong instructor, in-person lessons are considered more beneficial to learners instead of online videos. Having one-on-one instruction provides new players the opportunity to ask questions early on and eliminate any confusion. The basic gear beginners need in order to play includes a set of tiles, a mat, a rack, a National Mah Jongg League card, and a pair of dice. Once a player knows the rules and has the proper equipment, they can play almost anywhere.
Michelle Tinney runs several Mahjong events under her group Cypress Mahjong. Since February of 2025, Tinney has been an avid player and delights in sharing her passion with her community. She holds open games scheduled every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at World of Beer in Towne Lake. While Mahjong originated in China, it has become a beloved game globally that relieves stress, builds community, and strengthens memory. “Like all new experiences, drop your guard and give it a try,” shares Tinney. “I love to see the light bulb moment for a new player when they achieve their first Mahjong. It feels like you have conquered Mount Everest.”
