Sex trafficking does not always look the way people imagine. A person may appear to be making choices while actually living within a system of control. At its core, trafficking is about exploitation and the loss of freedom.

Traffickers often target vulnerabilities such as homelessness, instability, isolation, financial hardship, or a lack of support. They may first offer love, housing, employment, protection, or financial security before gradually introducing exploitation. Trafficking can happen anywhere, including within a person’s own community or home.

Leaving is only the beginning. Survivors may need safe housing, food, clothing, medical care, transportation, counseling, legal assistance, and support rebuilding their independence. The Freedom Collective steps in with survivor-centered, trauma-informed support designed to help each woman move from crisis toward stability, healing, and hope.

The organization is available around the clock so that when a woman is ready to take a courageous first step toward a new life, someone is ready to answer. From crisis response to practical care, the team works to ensure survivors have compassionate people beside them, helping turn a first step into a pathway toward lasting healing and restoration and renewed hope.

The Freedom Collective believes freedom is more than getting out. It is having the opportunity to build a life you choose. In Northwest Florida, the organization provides a 24/7 hotline, outreach, community partnerships, and an Emergency Safe Home operated in partnership with SAFE in the Panhandle. Together, this partnership gives survivors a safe place to land during a critical moment.

The goal is not simply to help someone leave an unsafe situation, but to walk alongside her as she rebuilds stability and independence. Freedom may mean sleeping safely for the first time, receiving medical care, finding employment, returning to school, reconnecting with family, or simply making personal decisions again.

Founder Jeff Shaw describes the heart of the mission: bringing the hope and light of Jesus into the darkness of sex trafficking and exploitation. The organization believes every person has God-given dignity and deserves to be seen, loved, and given the opportunity to choose freedom. As abolitionists, The Freedom Collective fights for freedom with joy and humility, for the glory of God—not their own.

The Heart of Our Volunteers

Volunteers are an essential part of The Freedom Collective family. They bring time, compassion, talents, and practical support to outreach, events, behind-the-scenes needs, and survivor care. Every person who shows up helps create hope and reminds survivors they are not alone.

Communities have a role, too. We can learn the signs of trafficking, listen without judgment, support survivor-serving organizations, and build partnerships that make exploitation harder to hide. When we stand together, we help create a community where freedom can become sustainable. Their presence matters every single day.
