Chronic Conditions: The Modern Normal

21st Century symptoms have become things to manage rather than signals of underlying problems

Regularly today, we consider chronic conditions “normal” as fatigue, allergies, and gut issues continue to rise. However, not everyone is ready to live with an undefined problem.

That’s where Dr. Kristina Roberts steps in. Her practice, Kona Integrative Health, seeks to find and address the causes of disease, not suppress symptoms, and to promote the body’s biological ability to heal through personalized holistic care.

For many, KIH, is their last desperate resort, coming in with blanket diagnoses, like fibromyalgia or autoimmune disorders, and long lists of medications. While fully supportive of pharmaceuticals, like with anything else there is a time and place. Too often people today are surviving on medication for unexplained symptoms, rather than finding the root of them.

Now, not everyone has access to a Functional Medicine Doctor, yet Dr. Roberts encourages that many of us could improve our health simply by “not ignoring the fundamentals.” Too many write it off when we are told to get good sleep, eat better, or exercise, but these very things are the pillars of our bodies' health. How can we expect it to heal itself effectively when we are not giving it what it needs?

And then there are things we often don’t consider: toxins, like mold, in our environment, filtering our drinking water, or doing something fun to relieve our body's stress. Though now a mother with young children, Dr. Roberts cherishes her limited time at her gym, Ho’omana Strength and Conditioning, as part of her own health journey.

So, if you are struggling like so many in the world today, think about how you can improve the quality of your food or what environmental pollutants may be affecting you at home. Unplug and go for an ocean swim or walk in the cloud forest. Maybe with a little less stress and a little more care, we can start making healthy the new normal.
