Years ago, when Reagan Phillips’s grandmother was losing her eyesight, Reagan decided to help organize her grandmother’s tiny apartment which was littered with old coffee cups, outdated clothes and stacks of paperwork. The task seemed straightforward: tidy up grandma’s home so she could be safe and not trip over anything, but little did Reagan know it would set her on a path to finding her life’s work.

That day she cleaned out her grandmother’s apartment, Reagan and her sister, Fara, removed seven giant trash bags of household clutter. Some of it was donated to charity, but a lot landed straight in the garbage. After that, when Reagan and her sister walked back into their grandmother’s apartment, the place had a completely different energy. Things were clear, refreshing and hopeful.

“I was so relieved and not worried about her tripping and falling anymore,” Reagan says. “It was at that moment, when everything was done, that I loved the way I too felt. I felt so much joy being able to give her this new energy in her home.”

Reagan realized she could do this same process for other people. Soon she was clearing out people’s pantries, cluttered closets and helping them organize the belongings in their homes. After every project the result was the same: people loved the feeling of having a neat and organized home.

Within months, Reagan launched her professional organizing service called Cure the Chaos. Since 2004, she’s helped hundreds of people get clarity in their space, clear their clutter and live more organized lives. She expanded her work to homes across the country and now has a team of professional organizers to help. She her own proven system called The CURE Method to help busy people organize their space and published a book about it that was ranked a #1 New Released on Amazon. Finally, this month—in honor of National Get Organized Month—she launched an online course to teach others how to clear their clutter and stay organized.

“My goal is to help as many people as I can to cure the chaos in their homes by getting organized,” she says. “Ultimately, I hope the organization skills they learn can then transform other parts of their lives.”

Reagan’s clients come to her from all walks of life and circumstances. Some have recently downsized and need to get rid of old belongings. Others are new parents overwhelmed with excess baby products and toys. Some simply need help locating their favorite spices in their pantry and call in Reagan to create a system.

No matter their situation, Reagan approaches each case with empathy and a plan. She is a keen listener, an unwavering optimist and staunch advocate for letting go of belongings that don’t have a purpose in your life. In her view, a cluttered space is a cluttered mind that keeps us from living our best possible lives. To fix that, she patiently takes each of her clients through her CURE Method process to help them clear their clutter and get organized in a way that works for them.

“Organization is not perfection,” she says. “Having an organized home is not about being perfect and spotless. It is about having a place for everything so you have less chaos and have more time for life.”

Taming the clutter in your home starts with creating a vision. Oftentimes, she encourages her clients to get inspired with images from Pinterest and decide ultimately what they want their space to be. Next, Reagan guides clients through her four-step system. First, they clear the clutter and remove everything from the space. Next, they categorize how they use each of their belongings. Many things simply need to be donated or thrown away, and Reagan sits with her clients and helps them decide. Next, she’ll find the right receptacle—such as a bin, basket or cart—to hold the things a client wants to keep and continue using. Finally, once everything is newly organized, Reagan leaves them with solid advice to help them maintain their new space. “The goal is to teach people how to organize themselves no matter what stage of life they are in,” she says. “Once they commit to the process, they can conquer any space in their home.”
