Congratulations Claire Boyette!

This year's Perkins Scholarship Winner is ready to get to work.

Perkins Orthodontics and West Fort Worth Lifestyle Magazine are thrilled to announce this year's Perkins Scholarship recipient is Claire Boyette, who captivated the selection committee with her essay on homelessness. We sat down with the incoming KU freshman to pick her brain about her next steps, motivation, and what it means to win this award.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
Claire: I just graduated from I.M. Terrell Academy in Fort Worth as the salutatorian, which was really exciting! We have a very small class, around 90 students, but I love that about my school. We're a tight-knit community. And now I'm in Kansas for orientation at the University of Kansas where I plan to study social work.

Q: What made you choose to pursue social work at KU?
Claire: KU has a strong School of Social Welfare and offers an undergraduate degree in social work, which is rare. Most universities only offer a master's in social work. So, I'll be able to get to work right away and save money on my education.

Q: How did your high school experience influence your career choice?
Claire: In my junior year, I took a Capstone Engineering course that focused on homelessness. I did extensive research on the topic, particularly in Fort Worth. This experience sparked my interest in social work and inspired me to help vulnerable communities.

Q: How will the Perkins Scholarship help you achieve your goals?
Claire: Tuition is expensive, so this scholarship will help me avoid debt. The financial support will alleviate stress and help me focus on my education and, eventually, a career in social work.

Q: How did you hear about the Perkins Scholarship?
Claire: My mom received an email about the scholarship from our orthodontist's office. I was a patient of Dr. Spradley and later Dr. Perkins so we were on their email list. The application process was straightforward, and I am so thankful to both doctors for the opportunity! With their financial support, I feel so excited for this next chapter.

Q: What are your future career plans?
Claire: I aim to help underrepresented communities and find solutions for homelessness. I want to travel and explore the world and make a positive impact wherever I go!
