Known as the windows into our soul, our eyes are our most defining facial feature. Most procedures, such as rhinoplasty, browlifting, even fillers, are geared towards drawing attention to our eyes. But what options are available when the skin around the eyes, namely the upper lid skin, is droopy? Excess skin and wrinkling of the upper eyelid skin can cause a tired, aged appearance and in extreme cases, can even impact your visual field!

For clients with excess skin, and/or fat, of their upper eyelids, an upper lid blepharoplasty may be indicated. This is a procedure that is usually done comfortably in the office under local anesthesia. The excess skin is removed and the skin edges are closed with sutures. The procedure usually takes 60-90minutes and there is minimal pain post-procedure.

Is upper lid blepharoplasty right for you?

If you are bothered by excessive weight/skin/heaviness of your eyelids, Drs. Goodrich and Pham will provide you with expert guidance. Sometimes the heaviness may be worsened by a low-riding brow or a low eyelid margin, so our expect facial plastic surgeons will recommend the best treatment option based on your personal anatomy and concerns.

If an upper lid blepharoplasty is selected, we recommend having someone drive you home after the procedure as your eyelids will be swollen and can potentially impact vision. You will be made very comfortable throughout the procedure and will go home to recover within minutes of completing the procedure.

During your recovery period, you can expect upper eyelid swelling and bruising of the area around the eyes. Use of oral Arnica and icing will significantly improve the swelling and bruising. For 3 weeks afterwards, you should refrain from cardiovascular activity or lifting objects over 5 lbs. We will see you the following week to remove the sutures. Once the sutures are removed, it will be important to wear sunscreen and keep the incisions away from sunlight, as sunlight will cause the incisions to become more red.

It can take months for all of the swelling in the area above the incision to fully reduce. Make up, such as eyeshadow, can be worn 2-3 weeks after the procedure to help with camouflage.

Upper lid blepharoplasty is a rejuvenating, in-office procedure, that is well-tolerated and has lasting and impactful results. Contact us to see if upper lid blepharoplasty is the right fit for you!
