Pura Vida For All

How Costa Rica Masters Family Fun, Sustainable Luxury and Eco-Tourism

Costa Rica is a rare destination that offers something for everyone. Its variety is what truly sets it apart; you can move from lush rainforests and volcanoes to serene beaches and luxury resorts all within one trip. It’s also a destination deeply rooted in wellness, sustainability and the “Pura Vida” (pure life) lifestyle, which focuses on an intentional mindset of gratitude, resilience and simplicity. It helps explain why it’s home to one of the world’s celebrated Blue Zones. For families, couples and adventure travelers alike, Costa Rica blends eco-conscious travel with unforgettable experiences in a way few places can.

Ashley Church, travel advisor for Travel Sense Co., shares her insider tips on what makes Costa Rica unique.

What I love most about Costa Rica is how many different environments you can experience in one trip. In one part of the country, you’re surrounded by rainforest, wildlife, waterfalls and volcano views. In another, you’re enjoying peaceful beaches and elevated coastal luxury. That contrast is what makes Costa Rica so special. It’s not just a beach destination; it’s an immersive nature destination where adventure, relaxation and sustainability all come together. Costa Rica is also incredibly intentional about protecting its natural environment, which adds so much value for travelers who want their trip to feel meaningful as well as beautiful.

Family-friendly, luxury, eco-friendly stays:

Near La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano, we stayed at Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, which was an incredible blend of luxury and nature, both family-friendly and adults looking for a romantic retreat. The natural hot springs were one of the most memorable parts of the trip, such a unique and relaxing experience. That area is ideal for travelers who want to combine adventure with upscale accommodation. Other standout luxury properties there include Nayara Tented Camp (family-friendly), Nayara Springs (adult-only) and The Springs Resort & Spa (family-friendly).

In Guanacaste, we stayed at the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo, which was the ultimate luxury experience. The Papagayo Peninsula is perfect for travelers wanting a refined beach stay, and the nearby Andaz Costa Rica is another great option. Many of these resorts do a beautiful job blending high-end hospitality with Costa Rica’s eco-conscious values.

As far as adventures go, this is what we recommend:

The Arenal area was definitely the adventure portion of our trip. Some of our favorite experiences were the hanging bridges (which I’d absolutely call a must-do), ziplining, a nocturnal wildlife hike and waterfall rappelling with Pure Trek Canyoning. That excursion was especially memorable because it combined adrenaline with an authentic Costa Rican lunch afterward.

I’d also recommend travelers consider places like Monteverde Cloud Forest and Manuel Antonio for future trips. Manuel Antonio is especially known for its biodiversity, wildlife and strong connection to eco-tourism, making it a great complement to a beach or volcano itinerary.

And the dining experiences:

We dined at the hotels during our stay, and the food was phenomenal throughout the trip. Costa Rica’s Blue Zone connection adds another interesting layer to the culinary experience because there’s a strong emphasis on fresh, nourishing ingredients and food that supports wellness. Even at luxury resorts, that sense of balance and local influence really comes through. Some of my highlights were the national dish, gallo pinto (a simple but perfect breakfast addition) and Costa Rican coffee. I still dream about the French press coffee each morning at Tabacon Resort & Spa.
