Married couples don’t often work side-by-side each day. And when they do, it takes a special couple to pull that off.
Brooke and Mike Perry, owners of Terra Health & Wellness, 1134 NE Douglas St. in Lee’s Summit, opened the store together in December 2019 and were married this past August.
Her background: marketing. His background: health and wellness. Both are certified holistic nutritionists. And together, they have about all aspects of the business covered.
“We couldn’t do it any other way,” Brooke said. “We both just have the opposite skills the other lacks. I’ve learned a ton from him since he got a little bit of a head start on the nutrition angle.”
Originally in Independence, the duo moved the business to Lee’s Summit and streamlined some products and processes. Today they offer a full line of supplements and vitamins, smoothies, bowls, whole-food supplements, organic skin care and a cooler with grab-and-go snacks and avocado toast.
“We saw a need for more super healthy options in Lee’s Summit,” Brooke said of the move. “There is nothing 100 percent plant-based like we are in Lee’s Summit. We’re focused on trying to educate people on the good stuff to take and overall nutrition.”
In the age of COVID, that is particularly important, too. Brooke said the shop never closed during the pandemic and supplement sales in fact increased.
“The supplement industry as a whole has grown exponentially since the pandemic started,” Brooke said.
The couple lives by the whole-food, energy-boosting model and the motto, “Let food be our medicine.” Customers will find a range of products that accomplish just that goal, from Vitamin C and fruits cold pressed into powders that support immune systems.
