Creating Unique Living Spaces: C. Newland Designs & Timeless Custom Window Coverings

With more than three decades of experience in design, Candice Newland considers herself an “intuitive designer” who works with clients to design and furnish an entirely unique, one-of-a-kind home.

“I'm able to identify the uniqueness of each client and I never do the same thing twice,” says Newland, who is the founder of C. Newland Designs and Timeless Custom Window Coverings.

“It's important that ‘cookie-cutter’ is left out of the equation of my design,” she says. “Each person is unique in this world, and my job is to make their space a version of their greatness. I take on the responsibility to find the balance between inspiration and tranquility, which is truly the goal for the ultimate living space.”

C. Newland Designs is a full service design company “and a Hunter Douglas dealer,” she emphasizes. Hunter Douglas is the world's leading manufacturer of window coverings. “We specialize in all the Hunter Douglas products—drapes, shutters and shades—and we also specialize in energy efficiency, motorization and blackout.”

Motorization is popular right now “because you can set timers for your window coverings so they open and close at different times of the day,” she explains. “We live in an instant gratification world these days—why not have easy access to these beautiful California views with different variations of light?”

With the Hunter Douglas PowerView® system, you can move your shades according to schedules you set—day or night, whether you’re home or away. You can operate your shades with your tablet or smartphone, and this system is also compatible with smart-home systems for premium convenience.

“I love to incorporate motorization in my designs,” she says. “If they don’t have motorization, they’re not getting the full usage of their windows. When they invest in motorization, they get the full spectrum of the advantage of window coverings.”

Every single one of her clients receives one-on-one design consultation to ensure they get exactly what they’re looking for.

“We have seasoned designers that come to your home to help match your surroundings, and you can pick from a wide variety of fabrics,” she says. “We do a free in-home consultation for that.”

The Process

There is always a motivating factor that moves the design in a specific direction, and “I start by giving clients choices and then based on their likes and dislikes, I learn very quickly how they resonate with specific aspects of design.”

This allows clients to find “their truth of choice,” Newland continues. “The process of finding out how my client really wants to express themselves through their home is especially important when they themselves may not know what they want.”

Looking back on Newland’s vocation, which started in childhood, it’s safe to say she was born with the talent to design. When she was young, her mother took her to fabric stores, where Newland resonated with quality textures and felt awed by the range of colors.

“I enjoyed it,” recalls Newland, adding that her mother taught her how to sew when she was 8. “When I learned how to sew, I found out I had a natural ability to make patterns from scratch.”

This natural talent evolved into creating her own line of clothing, including “really cool” reversible tapestry jackets, which she started selling at a shop on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills at the young age of 25.

“I love to create something from nothing,” she says. “I’ve always been attracted to fabrics, and I used to make custom draperies, which evolved into the window coverings I’m doing today. I’ve always had a love for that. I still do the one-of-a-kind creations, but what’s nice about being a Hunter Douglas dealer is that it allows me to do other beautiful things that are custom made from Hunter Douglas.”

Newland views her job as more of a passion that she enjoys nonstop.

“I don’t go to ‘work’ every day—I create every day. I have to create to feel passion. And I love sharing my gift with my clients because it is a gift. I can ‘see’ it before it’s completed—I have the vision,” she says. “Sometimes people might not like my first vision. It’s like a TV remote—you can change the channel and we’ll come up with another version. I adapt for clients, and I love that, too.”

Above all, “I try to create a space for people where they can find their tranquility—but also inspiration,” she adds. “And now, with a lot of people spending more time at home, if you can find that balance, you’re in good shape.”
