Since 2012, the Crescent Moon Lodge and Retreat Center has served as a sanctuary for those desiring to get away from the fast-paced hustle and bustle of life. Located just outside of Rattan across the Texas-Oklahoma border, the Crescent Moon Lodge and Retreat Center provides comfort and quiet reflection amid natural beauty in the wooded hills of the Kiamichi Wilderness.
The Crescent Moon Lodge and Retreat Center was founded by Dr. Suzanne Hales, a licensed professional counselor, certified Imago therapist, and a Swiss-trained Jungian analyst who owns and operates Counseling and Consulting Associates of North Texas in McKinney. She desired to have a place where people could come and heal and achieve internal peace.
“There is an old belief that one cannot enter into a sacred place and leave the same as he was before he entered,” says Dr. Hales. “My hope for all of our visitors is that they leave renewed and restored after relaxing and spending time among nature in this place of comfort and refuge.”
The 160-acre property has been Hales' family since 1941. In 2005 LaVerne Ewing, Dr. Hales’ mother, built a 5,000-square-foot log cabin. In fall 2020 Ewing died and shortly after Dr. Hales opened the retreat center as a place of respite. The name is symbolic as one experiences the crescent moon rise above the tree line, it shines enough light for one to see the next step, but it does not show the whole journey. The journey is often mysterious and mystical as often are our lives, just able to sometimes see the next step, hopefully experiencing a glimpse of solace to find oneself under the light of the crescent moon.
The Crescent Moon Lodge and Retreat Center amenities make for an upscale stay. The 5,000-square-foot lodge features an open floor plan and sleeps over 24 people with six bedrooms and five bathrooms. The great room showcases panoramic views from the large windows and an oversized fireplace with enough space for guests to relax. Guests can cook their meals in a
completely stocked gourmet kitchen. Groups larger than 10 can request a chef-prepared farm-to-table meal option made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. An outdoor hot tub provides relaxation and guests can enjoy the outside sounds on the patio or the large wrap-around porch.
The landscape features a river, which runs through the property, a large pond, and a natural spring-fed lake that is stocked for the interest of people who enjoy fishing. Guests can often watch the deer, eagles, turkeys, and numerous other birds and wildlife that call the property their home. There is a handmade stone labyrinth for walking meditation.
