For more than 50 years, some Mercer Island students have found their place at Crest Learning Center.
Crest has long served students whose educational journeys may look different from the traditional high school experience. Some students come to Crest seeking a smaller learning environment. Others benefit from additional structure, flexibility, or personalized support. What they often find is something much deeper. They find a community that sees and values them, and helps them thrive.
We spoke with many current and former students about what makes Crest special. A common theme emerged: the people and the sense of community. Teachers know them well. Staff notice when they are struggling and when they are thriving. Students acknowledge each other's differences and learn in reciprocity. Classrooms foster an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and taking risks.
Crest offers project-based learning and a supportive structure as a complement to the broad offerings at MIHS (where students continue to take math, foreign language, electives and engage in clubs and sports). One of the defining strengths is focus on building healthy and meaningful connections with students and families. Those connections create an environment where students can focus on learning rather than simply trying to navigate the challenges that may have made school difficult in the past.
The impact of Crest extends far beyond graduation.
Former students have gone on to attend colleges and universities, pursue careers in business, technology, education, healthcare, public service, and the arts, and become active members of their communities. While their paths differ, many share a common theme. Crest provided the foundation that helped them move forward with confidence.
Schools everywhere are being asked to do more with less, Crest remains a powerful reminder that education is about more than academics alone. It is about belonging, connection, confidence, and creating opportunities for every student to succeed.
For many students and families, Crest has been more than a program. It has been a lifeline, a launching pad, and a community.
