For Kim Worswick, owner of Kimberley Kay Interiors, exceptional design is about far more than creating a beautiful room. It is about understanding how a home should feel, how a family actually lives, and how thoughtful details can transform everyday life.
Her connection to design began early. “While other kids played with dolls, I was obsessed with decorating the dollhouse,” Kim says. “I loved creating beautiful rooms and imagining how people would live in them.”
That childhood fascination eventually became a career. After working for a local interior designer and unexpectedly losing her job, Kim took a leap of faith and launched Kimberley Kay Interiors. Today, her work extends well beyond Arizona, with projects taking her from Napa and Manhattan Beach to Nashville and Naples.
No matter the location, every project begins with the client.
“I always start by studying my client’s inspiration photos to understand what truly lights them up,” she explains. Rather than focusing solely on individual colors, furnishings or finishes, Kim looks for patterns in how clients want their surroundings to make them feel.
From there, the creative process unfolds organically. Sometimes an entire design can begin with a striking accent chair, an unforgettable wallpaper or a statement light fixture. “That one piece often becomes the catalyst for everything else,” she says.
It is an approach that helps create interiors that feel collected rather than overly decorated. Meaningful artwork, family heirlooms, favorite books and pieces discovered while traveling can all find a place alongside sophisticated furnishings and finishes.
“The most beautiful homes aren’t filled with trendy accessories,” Kim says. “They’re layered with pieces that tell your story while supporting the overall design of the home.”
For homeowners hoping to elevate their own spaces, Kim points to custom draperies as one of design’s most transformative finishing touches. Greenery, layered textures, beautiful lighting and thoughtfully selected artwork can also give a room warmth and dimension.
“The goal is never to fill a room. It’s to curate it,” she says.
While Kim appreciates current movements toward curved silhouettes, warm woods, natural stone, richer colors and layered textures, she cautions against allowing trends to dictate an entire home. Details such as scalloped edges, fluting and reeded finishes can be striking when used selectively, while natural materials such as marble possess a longevity that transcends passing styles.
Luxury, however, should never come at the expense of livability.
“A beautiful home should be lived in, not tiptoed around,” Kim says. For families with children, pets or a love of entertaining, performance fabrics, durable rugs and resilient finishes allow sophisticated interiors to withstand everyday life.
One space she believes deserves greater attention is the primary bedroom. Because guests rarely see it, homeowners often leave it until last. Kim believes the opposite approach can have a profound effect.
“Your bedroom is where you begin and end every day,” she says. “It’s where you decompress, recharge and leave behind the stress of work and everyday life.”
Ultimately, Kim measures a successful project not simply by how it photographs, but by how her clients feel when they return home.
“My hope is that every client walks into their home and feels an immediate sense of peace,” she says. “I want them to feel seen, inspired, and proud of the space we’ve created together a home that feels like them, only better.”
