Houston is the fourth-largest city in the United States, with more than 2.3 million people living there.

Additionally, tourists flock to the town known for space and petroleum exploration and the booming energy industry. With that said, they also need time to explore their well-being through physical exercise with all the activities going on in the city that's abuzz at all times.

Houston Area Gyms

There are over 100 gyms in Houston, of all assortments, to fulfill the appetites of fitness fanatics and novices in the city, also known for its excellent dining life.

The fitness centers encompassing those run by the city have gone all out to deliver the customers with state-of-the-art exercise gear, proficient trainers, and many amenities. If you live in the Houston area or you're visiting, browse this guide to gyms in Houston, TX, to encourage you to make a more knowledgeable determination about which gym to choose.

Gyms with Pools

There are 22 gyms with pools scattered across Houston. If you're in the region of the Houston Zoo, or the medical centers in that area, then you have a gym nearby. You'll also see two gyms with pool uptown. Not all the pools have high ratings, so do your due diligence.

24-hour gym

As vast and busy as Houston is, of the more than 100 gyms in Houston, only six of them offer around 24/7 workout sessions. However, the limited number of 24-hour gyms are all rated above four stars. 

Anytime Fitness is deemed as the "friendly neighborhood gym" and appeals to fitness buffs with not just its activities and equipment but the private showers and restrooms as well. Steel Mill Gym is a powerlifting facility that's less crowded after work hours, so many people like to go there at that time or in the wee hours. Meanwhile, Snap Fitness appeals to the after-hours crowd because of its dynamic training, wearable technology, and personal trainers. Many people are only available to work out after regular hours, and access to all work out activities is essential. 

There might not be much in terms of 24-hour gyms in Houston, but they sure make up for that with everything else. There's CrossFit, martial arts, ninja training, powerlifting, boxing, MMA, spas, and nutrition clubs.

We've divided the city into two to give a breakdown of gym type and availability. For those who prefer the outdoor vibe, a large number of gyms in Houston offer that service. It often depends on climate conditions, so be sure to enquire before going.

Downtown

Gyms are abundant in downtown Houston; in total, there are over 60 gyms accessible in that area of the populous city.

Seven of the gyms sit in the Central business district. There are also a few gyms in the vicinity of Discovery Green, a modern park that hosts a range of activities. 

Southwest Houston

Due to most gyms in Houston being in proximity to the southwest, people in the southwest have access to all of them. From MMA to crossfire and Yoga to Powerlifting, there is something for everyone on the southwest side of Houston.

Climbing Gym

There are nine climbing gyms in Houston and its suburbs. Only 5 of them are really in the metropolitan district. 

Momentum Indoor Climbing has two locations, but only one offers bouldering workout. Their site at Silver St only offers harness-based Bouldering with no top rope. On the other side, there is more top rope and less bouldering. People focused on competitive climbing tend to flock there.

Boxing Gym

Talk about boxing, and you're speaking Texan language.

There are several boxing gyms in Houston, all strategically placed across the city. with two in the middle of the Central business district. Title Boxing Club has a five-star rating for a good reason. Their workout studio and fitness center offers full-body workout programs, and their boxing activities attract a diverse age group.

Boxers learn to use correct heavy bag work out to strengthen and condition their limbs and core. 

CrossFit Gyms

From midtown to downtown, you'll find gyms in Houston that feature CrossFit training. Just below Katy Fwy and north of the Glenwood Cemetery, three cross-fit gyms sit just blocks away from each other. CrossFit gyms have intense strengthening and conditioning workout programs with a mixture of exercise strategies.

MMA Gyms

Over 50 gyms in Houston offer mixed martial arts (MMA) exercise. 

If you're south of the city, you'll have to drive both or due west to find an MMA gym. The great news is that they all have high ratings so anyone should suffice. In any area of town are, there should be no difficulty finding a decent MMA gym.

Powerlifting Gyms

There are 35 powerlifting gyms in Houston, the majority of which are literally in Houston proper. Bodybuilding and torso strengthening get high respect in this city and the entire state. 

Muscleheadz Gym and Fitness has equipment such as swiss bars, sledgehammers, sleds, plus a friendly atmosphere and music that is as intense as the workout sessions. Weightlifters can also get pumped at Alphalete Gym, with great weightlifting and cardio equipment plus a 40-yard outdoor gym. 

You can get a nice warm-up by deciding to stroll to one of the gyms in Houston if temperatures permit. Iron Fit gym offers a great combination of weights and cardio with a skilled training staff. Picture building muscles and losing some weight while doing it.

Basketball Gyms

Enjoy earning some hoop time at any of the plethoras of basketball gyms across Houston. The YMCA gyms have good ratings and well-equipped facilities. 

However, it's not the same for every basketball gym, so make sure to research the gyms before signing up. Lifetime Athletics has multiple locations in Houston and a great basketball program.

American Ninja Warrior Gyms

There are only two American Ninja Warrior gyms in Houston, and neither is anywhere near the city center. One ninja gym is in the Northwest Houston district, and the other is further north in the Champions Park area.

The great thing is that they all have well-equipped facilities with professional trainers. Both ninja gyms have intense training programs for people to wish to be the next American Ninja Warrior and more newbies programs. If ninja skills are what you crave, the trip up north is worth it, especially since both ninja gyms have high ratings.

UFC Gyms

If you are trying to find UFC gyms in Houston, there are only seven.

The two UFC gyms closest to downtown Houston are UFC Gym The Heights, located in the Greater Heights Area, and Elite Mixed Martial Arts-Greenway Plaza/Galleria. The latter has rave reviews and a 4.9-star rating, which will make the trip beneficial. They provide classes for both beginners and professionals and accept kids, women, and men.

Gymnastic Gyms

There are twenty gyms in Houston that provide gymnastics training. Only fifteen of them are rated higher than four stars.

Depending on the practice level you are striving for, you should communicate with a trainer before electing a gymnastic program. If you require a kid's workout session, Ready Flip Go has an outstanding program in an excellent facility. They host birthday parties too.

Quick Tip: If you're worried about gym membership expenses, consider petitioning for a fee waiver/reduction or a lower monthly payment. You'll learn that numerous gyms have exceptions to their costs.

Some even offer reductions for referrals. Houston is vibrant and beautiful, and so are many of the fitness centers. If you're northwest, southwest, downtown, or in the suburbs, there is ever a gym ready to serve you.
