It’s finally fall, y’all! And fall in Kansas City means football, falling leaves, pumpkin patches, and cider donuts. But it also means, the air gets a little crisper, which makes our city want to cozy up and hibernate at home. A must-have accessory for all the hygge vibes is an abundance of candles in all shapes, sizes, and scents, which means a visit to a KC staple, The Corner Candleshop in Brookside. Wait a minute, I thought the well-known candle shop in the heart of the Brookside Shops had a different name? You’re right my friends—the candle shop that has operated in this space for almost 20 years has the same location, same owner, same product, but the name got a 2020 “glow up.”
In 2002, former elementary school teacher, Lori Woods was on a day trip in Weston, when she stumbled upon Five Blessings Candleworks and was intrigued by owner, Marsha Flowers and her candles. She instantly loved the candles and knew that they would have a successful home in Brookside, among the other local makers, boutiques, and cafes. She asked if Marsha would be willing to mentor her, and in July 2003, Lori opened the Brookside location of 5B & Co. Candlemakers.
As time moved on, and the business, our city, and our world evolved, Lori knew that 2020 was the time to make a move that she had been considering for a long time—a name change for 5B & Co. that better reflected the store and its Brookside location. So she emerged from the Kansas City Stay At Home order with a brand new name—The Corner Candleshop.
The more than 175 different scents, and classic fragrances like Cuban Vanilla, Earl Grey Tea, and Brookside Bungalow, and seasonal offerings like Candy Corn, Caramel Apple, and Pumpkin Chai are only one reason why shoppers from all over the country flock to The Corner Candleshop. More than anything, it’s the quality. Their candles are hand poured right here in KC by the store’s team alone, using the best oils, lead-free cotton wicks, and clean burning soy-blended wax.
However, the reason I personally prefer to shop this store over any other is the experience. In addition to candles, the beautiful store is filled with a variety of home décor, seasonal decorations, and gift items. From party favors, to teacher appreciation, to birthday and holiday celebrations, you are sure to find the perfect candle for any person and any occasion.
But it’s the team that really makes the store come to life. During my visit, it is common to hear the workers call customers by their name and remember their favorite scents. The store instantly feels warm, and not just from the abundance of fiery products. Additionally impressive are the tips and tricks that the team readily gives out to customers to ensure you love your purchases and see the most success and benefit, for as long as possible.
Another unique addition to the traditional candle styles, The Corner Candleshop offers a “Now Pouring” list, where customers can bring in a container of their choice, and the scented wax is hand-poured into the container to make one-of-a-kind candles.
