Although the climate in the CSRA allows for great outdoor entertaining all year round, summertime brings longer days and the yearning to make a few changes to maximize outdoor spaces. Will Dalzell and the crew from Dalzell Design Landscaping specialize in making those dreams come true. “We are a landscape design, construction, and maintenance company,” explains Will. “Our mission is creating your beautiful outdoor environment through core values and teamwork.”

Using his landscape architecture degree from the University of Georgia, Will leads a full-service landscape building firm. “We can go all the way from brainstorming ideas to landscape architecture plans; installing landscapes, hardscapes, and outdoor living spaces; and then maintaining it on the back end,” he explains.

“We bring the indoors out by providing entertaining space outdoors where clients can create memories with their families and friends,” says Will. “That can be through creating a small patio area with a pergola or through something simple like a prayer garden. Bigger projects can range from a garage addition with an outdoor living space attached to it, outdoor fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, and pool houses. With fully enclosed outdoor living spaces, people can use them no matter what weather, especially if they are equipped with fans, misters, and mosquito control.”

Just how long does it take to turn a back yard into an outdoor entertaining space? “A small project can take just a couple of weeks,” explains Will, “and bigger projects can take up to six months or more depending on the scale of the project.” Timelines must take into consideration drawing the design, ordering materials, and the actual installation.

Occasionally, clients want more than a one-time project. “One of the things people like about our company is if we design a master plan for you, then we can have the overall plan for the yard (even if it’s a 10-year vision) and do something each year to fulfill that plan, or we can implement phases as the budget allows,” says Will.

When considering a budget for these projects, Will suggests approaching it differently than one might think. “One of the biggest misconceptions is the budget it takes to do nice, sustainable outdoor living spaces,” he says. “Building an outdoor living space can be somewhat like building a house – except it has to be outside in the elements. It needs to be built well enough and with quality materials, so that years down the road, it looks as good as it did the day we put it in.”
