Live music is a magical thing. While anyone can jam on their AirPods alone, the energy that connects a live crowd turns a song into an anthem. So when the weather heats up, the Northland's public spaces become a stage for some of the most talented musicians in the area.
We are blessed to have performance programs that feature a variety of musical styles from the three-part harmonies of Olivia Fox to the country stylings of Taylor Lynn Cullen to the dance fest that is Cherry Bomb. With so much music to enjoy, all you have to do is perfect your picnic basket game and find a comfortable spot!
Venues
Venue #1: Fence Stile Vineyards and Winery stores its bottled and barreled wine in underground wine caves next to the winery, where the temperature is naturally cool year-round. The winery uses one chamber for event space, including winery tours, live music, speakers, and food and wine events. Their cave series features monthly solo performers in an intimate setting. Each concert ticket includes a glass of wine as well as a two-hour performance. Shows sell out fast so book tickets early at events@fencestile.com.
Venue #2: Zona Rosa Town Square offers open seating for three nights of music. Bring a blanket and stretch out on the lawn outside of Bravo! Italian Cucina. On Thursdays, try your hand at the mic with karaoke with the Troubadour Retrievers. Friday and Saturday nights feature a mix of original artists and cover bands. (The Cars, anyone?)
Venue #3: Linden Square's Friday night concert series occasionally overlaps with larger festivals such as Whiskey Fest in October. With a permanent band shell and a grassy knoll perfect for relaxing, it's a great location to park the family on a Friday night. Admission is always free and guests are encouraged to bring food and non-alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is available for purchase from the No. 9 Saloon tent on site.
Venue #4: Macken Park is a great place to take the kids to play or listen to music in the middle of your work day! The Friday Music in the Park Series is entering its 44th year. With music running from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., it's a perfect place to enjoy lunch and music from around the world. Some of the musical styles include Hawaiian, Mexican, jazz, German, and Cajun.
Bands
Band #1: Taylor Lynn Cullen is a 22-year-old singer/songwriter and Nashville recording artist. Taylor has been writing music since she was 9 years old. By the time she started performing professionally at age 15, she had over 200 original songs written. Self taught on guitar and piano and currently has five music endorsements; including Daisy Rock Girl Guitars, Kurzweil Keyboards, Ultrasone Headphones, Artist Relations, and The Piano Store. Her original music is available on iTunes, Spotify, and anywhere music can be downloaded, as well as her own Pandora station. Her long-awaited EP Tennessee was released in June. All tracks were written and composed by Taylor and recorded at WarnerWorks Studio in Nashville.
Band #2: Olivia Fox. In 2016, after a decade as a solo artist, singer-songwriter Lauren Flynn desired to form a new project. She dreamed of creating three-part harmonies within deeply emotive music with a fresh, modern sound. After Lauren met vocalist Aubrey Callahan, the two began working together while searching for a third vocalist. The duo soon added violinist and singer Tiffany Smith. Alongside Lauren’s long-time manager David “DJ” Lee, the group began working with producer Tyler Banks. Tyler helped craft a hybrid style incorporating programmed beats and synth pads with traditional folk melodies, harmonies, and live instrumentation.
Band #3: The Vigil Annie band is a rare gem in KC and has an incredible sound. Featuring a female lead vocal, Gin Dorsey, sets them apart. Vigil Annie is a country western band that will rock today's hottest chart-toppers, and sprinkle in a few true classic surprises!
Band #4: Joy Zimmerman is a soulful singer-songwriter known for compelling vocals, inventive songs, and engaging performances. A traveling musician based in Kansas City, Joy released “To the Girl”, her sixth album of original music, in April of 2019. Joy is a multi-instrumentalist whose eclectic music might be best described as folk rock with extra helpings of other favorite genres.
