Owners Shelli and Paul Harlow have built more than a salon—they've created a place where clients can exhale, connect and leave feeling lighter than when they arrived. Every appointment is an opportunity to build confidence, offer care and remind each person that their story matters.
A Dream That Started Long Before Pure
For Shelli, the dream began long before she ever stepped behind a salon chair.
In middle school, she was already styling her little sister's hair.
"My sister is 10 years younger than I am," Shelli recalls. "She was my little doll. I would sit and fix her hair and it was something I enjoyed and loved."
That passion followed her into high school, where she had the opportunity to shadow at Capitol School of Cosmetology, an experience that confirmed she had found what she was meant to do.
Still, the path to salon ownership wasn't straight. Shelli enrolled at the University of Nebraska Omaha to study business, but something was missing. It was Paul who encouraged her to pursue the dream she had quietly carried for years.
"I wasn't really happy where I was working," Shelli says. " Paul told me, 'If you want to go to school, now is the time."
That leap of faith set Shelli on the path that would eventually lead to Pure Hair Studio. Thirty years later, she and Paul are still living that dream together. For Shelli, that means caring for the people who walk through the salon doors every day. For Paul, that means cheering her on, supporting her vision and helping create a place where both clients and stylists feel valued.
Building a Business During the Worst Possible Time
Like any dream, building it came with its share of challenges, many of them beyond Shelli and Paul's control. Their biggest test came before they welcomed their first clients.
In 2008, as a financial crisis swept across the United States, businesses were closing their doors and cutting staff. It was an uncertain time. While many were shutting down, Shelli and Paul were doing the opposite. They were opening the doors to Pure Hair Studio with money they had saved, fueled by determination and a belief in building something better.
"We opened our doors at a time when people questioned why we were doing it," Shelli says. "Apparently, it was unheard of. The news even came out to interview us because we were opening a business in 2008, when nobody else was. But we had an incredible team, and the relationships we built with previous clients carried over. Those clients became our first, and many are still with us today."
In 2023, Paul and Shelli learned that, after 15 years in the same location, their lease would not be renewed because another tenant was expanding its business. As it turned out, the change was a blessing in disguise, leading them to the welcoming Elkhorn community.
More Than a Salon
Much of Pure Hair Studio’s success can be traced to the culture Shelli and her team have intentionally created, one built on relationships.
"Relationships are the foundation of everything we do here," Shelli says. "That starts with the stylists who work here. They are the reason behind our success. We've been fortunate to be represented by outstanding people. That's why it's important to us to support them through life's challenges and celebrate during life's joys."
That philosophy begins with the salon's team. For Shelli and Paul, investing in their stylists means helping them pursue not only successful careers but fulfilling lives.
"Our hope is that each one is able to live their own personal dreams," Shelli explains. "Whether that's teaching others one day, staying here to love on their people or even opening their own business."
That commitment isn't simply something they talk about. It's woven into the way they lead.
"We meet one-on-one with our stylists to check in, see how they're doing and ask what they're working toward personally," Paul explains. “We are able to come alongside them, create plans and support them. That's something we're committed to doing here at Pure."
It's that same spirit of care that extends to every client who walks through the salon's doors.
"You don't know what someone is going through. Some people share, and some don't," Paul says. "But when you foster an atmosphere of care and understanding, you create a place where people feel safe, and sometimes safe enough to invite us into their lives."
Becoming Part of People's Lives
Being invited into people's lives is something Shelli and Paul never take for granted. Over the years, they've collected countless stories of clients who became like family, trusting them with some of life's most difficult moments.
"We have been given the opportunity over the years to help many individuals in our Pure community," Shelli recalls, her voice catching with emotion. "Moments like that stay with you."
"Those moments are incredibly precious to us because they didn't have to invite us into their world, but they chose to," Paul reflects.
Time and again, the salon team has rallied around clients and members of the community facing grief, illness and hardship. Whether it's offering a listening ear, a warm embrace or simply a safe place to be, they believe caring for people extends far beyond what happens in the salon chair.
"Sometimes people just need someone to listen," she says. "And we get the privilege of providing that every day."
