"It's a great place and family to work for," says Suzy Scott, a Dems manager who started working at the store part-time in high school about 45 years ago. For many years, our customers have affectionately called the staff 'The Dems Gems,' and we now have fourth-generation great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Combs, also a 'Dems Gem.' We all enjoy helping clients with a variety of services."

Jewelry is a form of self-expression, a way to stand out from the crowd.
Suzy says fall trends in jewelry include mixed metals, large colorful gems, heavy-duty chains, polished gold door-knocker and super-sized hoop earrings, pearl earrings, and ultra long necklaces. "Yellow gold is making a comeback. White metals -- gold, platinum, silver -- are always in style," she adds.
Pearl jewelry is always a great accessory, but Suzy says this fall mixing pearls with gold and colored stones will be one of the best styles.
She says they are finding necklaces are interchangeable, and can be layered and stacked. A dramatic statement can be a choker paired with a diamond by-the-inch necklace and a longer teardrop or “Y” necklace, she adds.
Diamond stud earrings, diamond hoop earrings, multi-diamond dangle pendants and diamond bangle bracelets also are predicted to be popular through the year-end holiday season.
Suzy says stackable rings and bracelets are in style, by using different metals, styles and stones.
"Love is always in the air, and so are diamond engagement rings. Today's couples often shop together to select the perfect ring. We have a great selection of traditional, vintage and custom designs," she says.
Origin Of Store Name
They began in Boozer Shopping Center in 1969 when B.J. Livingston purchased the jewelry store from Reinhart D E M S, an amazing master goldsmith. Mr. D E M S and his family were World War II concentration camp survivors from Poland who settled in Columbia. B.J. kept the D E M S name to honor Reinhart and his family.
The jewelry shop now has customers from across the United States. Dems' staffers can work with clients regarding financing and layaway. They also buy and trade gold and diamonds.
Community Support
"Connecting with our community and giving back is very important to Dems' brother and sister co-owners, Steve Livingston and Debbie Lucas, as well as all of us," says Suzy.
A good example of this community importance was when the Dems' team had unique glass beads created by an artist, all to provide to local cancer survivors.
"We closed the store to the public to have a private bead presentation to the recipients. It was the first time that the name of their personal beads were disclosed. They got to take the beads, then we sold more of the beads, with part of the proceeds going to several local organizations that help cancer patients in the community," says Suzy. "We raised more than $40,000 for cancer over several years through our 'Beat It, Bead It' program, with the great support of our community and our special beads, which sold for $38 each."

- Dirt buildup may hasten the wear of jewelry. Dems offers a spa treatment for jewelry, free inspection and cleaning.
- Routine inspections help assure that jewelry is kept in good condition. During an inspection, a jeweler looks for broken or worn prongs, weak clasps, or other damage before a diamond is lost, or a chain, bracelet or strand of pearls is broken.
- Avoid heavy blows to diamonds, which can chip if struck at the right angle. If jewelry is bumped or snagged, have it inspected for potential damage.
- Salt water and jewelry don’t mix. Ocean water can damage some stones and metals. Pearls are easily damaged by an array of personal products, such as cosmetics and lotions.
