Audrey says her journey in design can be traced back to watching her parents build their dream home in rural Texas when she was a child. She took the leap and launched Audrey Scheck Design in Austin in 2020 and says she’s enjoyed being able to collaborate with clients to create timeless spaces that will be cherished for years to come. “Each project is a reflection of thoughtful consideration for both functionality and comfort, resulting in homes that feel artfully layered yet deeply personal,” she says. “I’m passionate about mixing the old with the new and creating a sense of coziness through layers of textiles, patterns, and earthy tones that make a home feel both inviting and unique.”
Decorating a house to feel like a home can be an expensive endeavor, but Audrey says, “One area where people often overspend in interior design is on custom pieces. While custom furnishings, window treatments, and cabinetry can undoubtedly add a unique and personalized touch to a space, opting for custom everything can quickly deplete a budget. Custom items tend to be more expensive due to the materials, craftsmanship, and design time involved. My advice is to strike a balance, combining a few custom items with high-quality, ready-made pieces that can achieve the same luxurious look without the hefty price tag. Another recommendation is to prioritize more durable and timeless finishes that will stand the test of time and trends.”
Below are four more design hacks to make your living space look lux, without draining your bank account.
Design Hacks:
Hack 1
Vintage Art + Decor
Shopping at your local antique mall is a great way to achieve a luxury look for less. A key element to crafting a cozy, inviting home is blending old and new to create a space that feels both unique and personal. Antique finds can add character and depth to your home, turning it into a story-rich environment.
Hack 2
Paint
One of our favorite ways to transform a home is through paint. Consider painting your cabinets or color-drenching your bedroom (painting all surfaces the same color) to completely refresh the look of your room without overspending. Color drenching brings a sense of richness and warmth, making the space feel both cozy and sophisticated.
Hack 3
Family Heirlooms:
A wonderful way to infuse your home with character at little to no cost. Whether it’s a piece of furniture, artwork or decorative object, heirlooms are often one-of-a-kind treasures with deep personal significance that add a sense of history to your home. And, heirlooms are typically crafted with high-quality materials, bringing lasting character to your space for years to come.
Hack 4
Forage for Greenery:
Adding greenery to your home is a great way to bring color, texture and life into a space. While fresh florals or faux stems often come with a steep price tag, a simple and cost-free alternative is foraging from your own yard. Gather fresh stems or branches with interesting textures or flowering vines to give your home an organic feel.
