Design That Feels Like Home

Union Place blends high-style interiors with smart tech integration for homes that work as beautifully as they look

Have you ever walked into a room and wished you could style your home in a similar way? Maybe it’s the furniture that pairs so well with the wall colors, or the decor that perfectly accents the rest of the space. The good news is that interior design is very intentional, and Union Place is the best in the game at collaborating with clients to deliver on those seamless styles.

A family-owned and boutique-style interior design firm located in Excelsior, Union Place, offers interior design services and home technology systems.

The combination of tech and design gives Union Place a unique position in the interior design market. But it’s really the team’s commitment to collaboration and excellence that sets them apart.

“One of my philosophies is that I don’t have a 'look.' If you hire me to help you with your home, it’s really gonna look like it belongs to you and what you think is for you. My ideas help you make better decisions than you would on your own. I work collaboratively that way,” says Maud Duggan, co-owner of Union Place.

Within the interior design space, Union Place is a one-stop shop for all your ideas. The team has helped homeowners style single rooms or entire homes. They’ve also helped with the design of commercial properties. But it’s not just entire spaces they design.

Union Place’s workroom allows the team to design and make new pieces for clients, on top of having access to over 300 vendor lines. The workroom’s artisans and craftsmen “create and fabricate everything from window treatments to custom-built home furnishings.”

So even if you have a small piece of furniture that needs reupholstering, Union Place has the tools to do it.

The design process works hand-in-hand with the home systems installations as well.

Managed by co-owner Brian Duggan, the home systems consist of home theaters, smart home automation, audio and video, and security and surveillance. You may be wondering how interior design plays into the technology add-ons, but there are so many options regarding placement, visibility, and style.

“Sometimes people think it’s a very odd combination for a company to have both of these types of avenues for projects, until they need both. And then, depending on the scope, Brian and I will have meetings with both of us,” Maud says.

Maud says things they consider when installing home systems include how motorized shades will be operated, whether speakers will be hidden behind wallpaper, and if televisions will have frames so as not to distract from the design of the room.

So how do you determine what the best style and technology needs are for your space? Giving Maud a call and setting up an initial intake consultation is the best first step. Even if you don’t have a concrete vision for your space, Maud can help with ideas of her own.

“Thinking of the architecture of the house, how the family uses the furniture, if they have children, and dogs. Sometimes we’re working with people who have issues with mobility accessibility,” Maud says. “There are those parameters that are important for me to keep in mind. Then I look around and I put together a look that I think I’d be really happy with and see what they think.”

And if you’re still unsure and want inspiration before getting in touch with Union Place, there are some interior design trends growing in popularity right now.

Maud says color palettes are moving away from grays and whites towards more moody tones such as reds, greens, blues, and plums. She has also noticed a “more is more” mentality when it comes to designs, such as repeating bold patterns.

A lot of wall finishes, upholstery, paneling, and wallpaper are coming into style, as well as curvier or organic furniture styling. Overall, Maud has noticed interior design trends moving away from a minimalist approach.

Whether trending or not, your home should reflect your style and your needs. All things Union Place is perfectly equipped to help you with.
