Rungolee founder and creative director Anjali Kamra says her clothing is “designed to roam the world.” She has done just that in creating her small-batch, luxury women’s ready-to-wear brand inspired by global travel.
“I travel the world to create collections that have cultural depth and richness as well as contemporary elegance,” Anjali says.
She describes the “Rungolee woman,” her muse, as “a connoisseur of life’s adventures. Her wardrobe is her canvas, and the world is her source of inspiration.”
Crafted mostly in 100% silk or cotton, Rungolee’s collections are designed in St. Louis and produced at Anjali’s own atelier in Mumbai, India. Each piece is created in small batches with an emphasis on quality, versatility and timeless design.
“Our designs may seem contemporary and simple, but they have great depth. The prints are very sophisticated. Our pieces transition effortlessly across different settings. They are seasonless. We are not chasing trends.”
Anjali says her pieces are “easy to dress up or down. Each of our fabrics begins as an original drawing or painting, and is carefully developed before being translated into hand screen prints, sometimes requiring multiple screens. The process can take up to six months.”
From the vibrant colors and craftsmanship of India to the sophisticated style of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Southampton and Portofino, Anjali draws inspiration from destinations around the world. She also comes from a family steeped in generations of couture craftsmanship.
Born and raised in Kolkata, India, Anjali later studied at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology before ultimately making St. Louis home.
“I always loved fashion,” she says. “I grew up cutting fabric, creating my own pieces and making my own outfits.”
Anjali’s aunt, Swaran Kamra, built a renowned couture fashion house in Mumbai, creating garments for royalty and discerning clients. Today, at 92, Swaran continues to lend her artistry to Rungolee, working alongside Anjali at the brand’s atelier in India’s fashion capital.
There, Rungolee artisans handcraft each garment with meticulous attention to detail.
“Our designs are infused with the essence of India’s rich cultural tapestry,” Anjali asserts. “With featherweight cottons, fluid silhouettes and hand-beaded details, our collections pay homage to India’s rich textile heritage while feeling effortlessly modern and perfect for every occasion.”
The name Rungolee is rooted in Indian culture as well. Inspired by the traditional art of Rangoli. derived from the Sanskrit words rang (color) and avali (row or pattern), the name reflects the beauty of artistic expression through intricate designs and vibrant color.
Since launching in 2007, Rungolee has grown into a global luxury lifestyle brand, with an online boutique, its St. Louis flagship, premier retail partners and pop-up boutiques around the country.
Still, community and personal connection remain at the heart of Anjali’s vision.
“The people in St. Louis have been amazing and so supportive. We are a place where people can pause, sit and simply connect,” she says. “In this world of AI, we believe technology will never replace taste or human connection. Everything we create is made with intention and care, and our greatest hope is that each piece brings joy to the person who wears it.”
