For Robyn Halperin, owner of Nest in the Desert Studio, that philosophy has guided her career. After many successful years as the founder and former owner of Robyn’s Nest, she realized she wasn’t ready to step away from the work that had always inspired her.
"I realized how much I missed helping people create homes they truly loved," Robyn says. "Design has always been my passion, and I knew I wasn't finished." That passion inspired the opening of Nest in the Desert in Tucson, followed by Nest in the Desert Studio in the West Valley.
From the beginning, Robyn envisioned more than a home decor boutique. "I've always believed that a home should tell a story," she says. "The most memorable homes evolve over time. They're layered with pieces that reflect the people who live there and create a feeling you simply can't replicate." That belief is reflected throughout the studio, where every item is chosen with intention to help homeowners create spaces that feel collected rather than copied.
Rather than relying on catalogs or passing trends, Robyn travels extensively to source distinctive furnishings, artwork, and accessories clients won't find everywhere else. Every piece is selected for its authenticity, character, and ability to evoke emotion.
Her buying process starts with one simple question: "Does this piece make me feel something?" If the answer is yes, she then considers authenticity, quality, scale, texture, and versatility. "The best pieces become part of your everyday living while still feeling special every time you walk into the room," she says.
That philosophy reflects a larger shift in today's design world. Homeowners are moving away from perfectly staged interiors in favor of homes that feel warmer, more collected, and more personal. Rich wood tones, handcrafted furnishings, natural stone, layered textures, vintage accents, and meaningful collections have replaced the stark minimalism that dominated for years.
"The trends with lasting power are the ones rooted in authenticity," Robyn explains. "Those never go out of style because they create homes that feel genuine rather than trendy."
Fortunately, creating that feeling doesn't require a complete redesign. "Sometimes it isn’t about buying more, it’s about making thoughtful choices," she says. Rearranging furniture, adding texture, updating lighting, or introducing a statement piece can dramatically change a room.
She also encourages homeowners to stop worrying about perfectly matching finishes. "Don't focus on matching; focus on balance," she says. "The most interesting rooms combine smooth with rough, old with new, light with dark, and polished with organic." Layering textures and materials creates warmth, depth, and personality.
For Robyn, the most luxurious homes are also the most personal. She encourages clients to display artwork they love, travel treasures, family heirlooms, meaningful books, and collected objects that tell their story. “The goal isn’t to fill every shelf,” she says. “It’s to surround yourself with pieces that have meaning. That’s what makes a home impossible to duplicate.”
She also reminds clients that beautiful homes aren't finished overnight. “Great design comes from layering thoughtfully and allowing your home to grow with you,” Robyn says. Many of her clients have worked with her for years, gradually adding meaningful pieces that reflect each new chapter of their lives.
Living in Arizona has also shaped her design perspective. "The desert teaches you that simplicity can still have incredible richness," she says, explaining that the landscape's colors and textures inspire collections that add warmth and character.
When clients visit Nest in the Desert Studio, Robyn hopes they leave with more than a beautiful purchase. "I want customers to feel inspired the moment they walk through the door, not overwhelmed," she says. "When someone leaves with a piece they truly love, they've taken home something that becomes part of their story."
For Robyn, that’s the true meaning of luxury. It isn’t about chasing trends or furnishing a home overnight. It’s about creating spaces that evolve naturally, reflect the people who live there, and tell a story that’s uniquely their own.
