Designing a Real Estate Business

Local agents have fun while selling Lee’s Summit

Amy Robertson and Mindy Methner began their real estate business less than two years ago, but their years of experience working in retail and home design helped pave the way to become business partners through ReeceNichols.

For years, Robertson and her family were owners of Cameron’s Home Furnishings in downtown Lee’s Summit. Methner also owned some downtown businesses and worked for Robertson and her family doing interior design. After they both moved on from their respective businesses, they also both individually decided to obtain real estate licenses. 

When they discovered they both had a similar idea, they decided to start a real estate business in downtown Lee’s Summit together given their shared love for the community. 

Given their backgrounds in interior design, Methner says they can take a home that might need some love and stage it well, which helps buyers develop a vision of what it would look like as their own home. They also like to have fun with their work and try to keep things lighthearted as much as possible.

“Moving is up there as one of the most stressful times of your life,” Methner says. “If we can put a little fun in it and ease your mind, why wouldn’t someone want to have that kind of fun?” 

With an emphasis on design tips and lighthearted updates, they say their social media presence is not something you would typically expect from realtors. They also keep their business fun through concepts such as renting a coach bus and taking friends, potential buyers, and community members on a day of shopping and checking out the spring homes tour. They also offer occasional crafting and decorating classes.

While beginning their business during the pandemic was an interesting experience, they say their experience in retail has taught them to think on their feet, and they moved forward with virtual showings and a YouTube channel.

“It made us better and stronger,” Robertson says. “We just laughed our way through the year.”

In the current market, Robertson says anyone who has been in their home for more than five years is probably sitting on more equity than they realize. For many, it would be worth reaching out for a market analysis.

“Mindy and I pride ourselves on our reputation and our integrity,” Robertson says.
