"I still cry when I tell that story."
Tears and beautiful stories aren't rare occurrences for Heidi Kalafut, owner of Heidi Marie Private Jeweler + Designer, and it's not hard to see why.
For Kalafut, every consultation begins like the opening page of a new chapter- one that she treasures being part of.
Some clients arrive carrying the past in a grandmother's ring or a strand of pearls. Others are writing new beginnings with an engagement, wedding or growing family. Together, those chapters tell the story of a business built not simply on beautiful jewelry but on preserving the people and memories that give life meaning.
This is where Kalafut thrives, honored to play a part in some of life's most meaningful chapters.
A Sixth-Grade Dream
Kalafut has been an artist at heart for as long as she can remember. Drawn to beautiful things, she recalls a few defining moments that sparked her love of jewelry and jewelry design.
"I remember standing in the checkout line with my dad in sixth grade and flipping through an ELLE magazine," she says. "There was an ad for these gorgeous pieces of jewelry, and it said, 'For pricing, please call.' I remember asking my dad if this was something people did for a living, and he said yes."
"I guess it was the first time I realized people could design and sell jewelry as a career."
And the fascination didn't end in the check out lane, another pivotal memory took place at Mall of America.
"They had a glass bead store there and I was just so mesmerized by the endless colors and designs," she recalls.
Kalafut spent what felt like hours combing through displays in search of the perfect beads to add to her growing collection.
"I think my sister and mom are still slightly traumatized by how much time I spent there," she laughs.
The Unexpected Journey
This passion for jewelry design stayed with Kalafut throughout high school and in college she earned a Bachelor of Arts in fine arts from the University of Iowa while also completing an entrepreneurial certificate through the Tippie College of Business.
It was while at the University that she accepted a job at a jewelry store, a decision that would end up shaping her not only as a designer, but as a person and soon-to-be business owner.
"I took a job at Hands Jewelers, this family-owned business that had been around for generations and sits in this iconic building in downtown Iowa City," Kalafut remembers. "I was just this little college kid they welcomed in. Most of the people working there were family, so I really felt honored."
At Hands Jewelers, Kalafut flourished. Through observation, mentorship and increasing responsibility, she eventually became assistant manager in 2011, gaining firsthand experience in nearly every aspect of the business.
"They even allowed me to design jewelry pieces, which was amazing," she says.
But like many good stories, hers included an unexpected detour.
After six and a half years at the store, Kalafut left Hands Jewelers to begin a new chapter with her husband in Davenport, Iowa where they later welcomed their daughter Ava.
It was after the move to Davenport that Kalafut stepped away from the jewelry industry and into financial services. Just as she began to believe her jewelry days were behind her, an unexpected opportunity arrived and quietly changed the course of her life.
Building a Business One Story at a Time
After moving to Omaha, Kalafut found herself becoming increasingly involved in the community, quickly forming friendships along the way.
"I laugh because I wasn't looking for this at all," Kalafut says. "But all at once I had a co-worker, a neighbor and a girl from Junior League all tell me they were going to be getting engaged soon."
With years of experience still behind her, Kalafut casually mentioned that if their boyfriends wanted guidance as they shopped for engagement rings, she would be happy to help.
"I remember sitting down with them and giving them the ins and outs, and all three of them were like, 'Can't I just buy it from you?'"
The rest, as they say, is history.
After selling three engagement rings from her kitchen table and guiding the couples through the design process, she realized she had found her way back to the career she loved.
Heidi Marie Private Jeweler + Designer officially launched in 2020.
For Kalafut, however, the business has never simply been about selling jewelry. It's about the people on the other side of the consultation table.
"Just seeing my clients' faces light up when they finally see what we've been talking about and designing for months sitting in a box in front of them," she says. "There really is no greater feeling."
And these stories are not few and far between.
Built for Generations
When clients walk into Kalafut's office, they arrive for many different reasons, but they all share a common thread— a desire to commemorate something beautiful and deeply meaningful in their lives.
One story that stands out to Kalafut involves a mother whose daughter was preparing for marriage, wanting to give her daughter a truly meaningful gift, she brought in her late parents' wedding rings. The bride had been especially close to her grandparents, and her mother hoped to create a piece that would carry their memory into her daughter’s wedding day.
"We melted down their rings and created a beautiful vertical bar style pendant with the larger diamond at the top with the smaller diamonds scattered below to resemble the 'stars from the heavens' symbolizing her grandparents watching over her," Kalafut recalls, her voice catching with emotion. "I always cry telling this story because she was crying, I was crying, and it was incredibly special for their family. It was such an honor for me to be part of it."
Kalafut emphasizes that creating custom jewelry doesn't replace memories but creates opportunities for new ones as these pieces are worn for years to come.
Celebrating Every Chapter
What Kalafut offers her clients goes far beyond beautiful jewelry. As a designer, she gives them the opportunity to create something that is uniquely their own. From meaningful engravings inside a band and carefully selected gemstones to custom settings and heirloom pieces that combine jewelry from multiple generations, each design tells a personal story and honors the people who matter most.
Engagements, anniversaries and birthdays are among the most common occasions that inspire people to purchase jewelry for themselves or a loved one. Another increasingly popular tradition is the "push present," a meaningful gift given to celebrate the birth of a child. Often featuring the birthstones of the new baby, these pieces serve as lasting reminders of one of life's most significant milestones.
"Your wife deserves a little sparkle," Kalafut says with a smile. "I joke about it, but the truth is, you're creating something that can become part of your family's story. Mom gets to wear it now, keep it safe and enjoy it, but one day she can pass it down to her child. Whether it's a 16th birthday, graduation or wedding day, she can say, 'This is the piece of jewelry I received when you were born.'"
A Story Worth Telling
Those are the moments that remind Kalafut why she fell in love with jewelry in the first place. Beyond the diamonds, precious metals and gemstones lies something far more enduring: the opportunity to create pieces that celebrate life's biggest milestones while carrying the stories, memories and people who make them precious.
And that's exactly what Kalafut hopes every client takes with them: the stories behind each piece that give it lasting value. "Jewelry can tell the story and carry on a legacy," Kalafut says. "It's just nice to be able to help them create something that has meaning for them and will continue to do so for the rest of their lives."
Whether she's redesigning a grandmother's wedding ring, celebrating the birth of a child or crafting an engagement ring from the ground up, Kalafut isn't simply creating jewelry. She's helping families write the next chapter of their story, one that will be worn, treasured and passed from one generation to the next.
