It is one of the first questions many people ask after they have been hurt. At Ready Law, we hear it often: do I really need a lawyer, or can I handle the insurance company myself? In fact, we see it on Reddit all the time. They may be getting calls from an insurance adjuster, trying to keep up with medical appointments, and wondering whether hiring a lawyer will actually make things easier or just more complicated. Many people wonder whether the cost of a lawyer is worth it.
In many injury cases, having a lawyer makes a real difference, and here’s why.
Insurance companies are not on your side
Most people understand this in theory, but it feels different when they are the ones living through it. Insurance companies are businesses. Part of their job is to control what they pay on claims. That can be hard to accept, especially when you have paid premiums and expected coverage to be there when something goes wrong.
When you talk to an adjuster without a lawyer, the adjuster understands the imbalance right away. They know you may not have handled an injury claim before. They know you may not know what the claim is worth. They know you may not recognize the tactics being used. They also know you are much less likely to file a lawsuit on your own, which means that their potential exposure is lower and the risk is lower if they keep their offers low.
A lawyer changes that conversation immediately. Not because lawyers have magic words, but because we know the process, the rules, and the pressure points. We know when an offer is too low. We know how to build the case and push back at every step. Importantly, insurance companies pay attention to which lawyers are willing to try cases and which ones usually take an early offer. That is one reason it matters to choose an experienced trial lawyer. Even when a case settles, serious trial preparation can help increase the value of the claim.
Yes, there is a fee
Personal injury lawyers are usually paid a percentage of what they recover for the client, which is known as a contingency fee (inside tip: it’s common practice that you pay nothing unless your case settles or wins at trial; it’s not special!). That is a real cost, and you should think about it before hiring anyone. In fact, it is often the first concern people raise: yes, but then I have to pay the lawyer.
That is where the math matters. Early in a claim, people sometimes compare the lawyer’s fee to the offer already on the table or to the bills they have received so far. But the first offer is often not the real measure of the case. And medical billing is how insurance companies value a case, not what you are entitled to under the law. A good injury lawyer should help improve the outcome, not leave the client worse off than if the client had handled the claim alone.
Here is one example from our own firm.
From $400 to $50,000: A Ready Law Case
Ready Law recently resolved a case for $50,000 for a client who deserved to be taken seriously. That was not the full measure of her injuries and losses. It was the full amount of insurance coverage available. In other words, we recovered everything that could be recovered from that policy.
Before we filed the lawsuit, the insurance company had offered $400. Not $4,000. Not $40,000. Four hundred dollars.
The client did not suddenly become more injured. The crash did not change. The treatment did not change. What changed was the way the case was prepared and presented. We filed suit, developed the evidence, advocated throughout the process, and refused to accept an offer that did not reflect the claim.
That is difficult to do alone. If you do not know what the insurance company is doing, it is hard to challenge it. If you have never prepared a case for trial, you do not bring the same leverage to settlement negotiations as someone who has.
What to do next
The good news is that finding out whether legal help would make a difference usually costs nothing. Most personal injury lawyers, including Ready Law, offer free consultations. You can talk through what happened, explain your injuries and treatment, and ask direct questions about whether hiring a lawyer makes sense for your situation. We will meet with you in person or virtually, and at a location that is comfortable for you. We are conveniently located in Centennial, right off I-25, between County Like Road and Dry Creek.
If you were injured because of someone else’s negligence and are wondering whether a lawyer is worth it, a consultation is often the easiest next step. You can get answers from people who handle these cases every day, without paying for the lawyer’s time and without any obligation to hire the firm.
It is a much better place to start than Reddit.
The bottom line
Do you really need a lawyer after an injury? In many situations, it is worth having the conversation. Insurance companies count on injured people not knowing the value of their own claims. Having an advocate helps level the playing field, and the difference can be significant.
