DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY.

After completing my college education, I began my career in 2002 as a salesperson at a local Ford dealership. It was an exciting time for me as I played a significant role in the emergence of online car sales. Within three months, I was promoted to the position of internet sales manager, and over the next decade, I held various roles, including business manager and pre-owned sales manager. My time at Ford was invaluable and helped shape me into the professional I am today.

After leaving Ford, I briefly worked at Nissan before joining Mercedes-Benz of Midlothian in December 2012. Since then, I have had an incredible journey with the company. I learned from many amazing mentors, including Ron West and Dave Mitchell, as I progressed to general sales manager in January 2016 and then general manager in January 2023. Despite facing enormous challenges over the years, such as the financial crisis and the pandemic, I believe these hurdles have taught me to be adaptable and well-prepared. I look forward to continuing to learn from an even larger support system, as Mercedes-Benz of Midlothian is now part of the 26-store and growing Murgado Automotive Group.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN AUTOMOTIVE, AND WHEN DID YOU MAKE THAT DECISION?

I've been fascinated by cars since I was a kid. I used to collect Matchbox cars and Hot Wheels, while Lamborghini books and posters decorated my room. During my high school and college years, I enjoyed customizing Hondas, which eventually led me to take a leap of faith in pursuing a career in the automotive industry after graduating.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A GENERAL MANAGER AT MERCEDES BENZ OF MIDLOTHIAN?

I learned from some of the best in the business and saw how they took pride in caring for the employees who care for the customers. I have a strong desire to help the individuals that I work with grow and develop. Additionally, I am committed to my own personal growth and development.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE?

I lead by example, demonstrate empathy, and balance competition with compassion. My goal is to inspire my employees to reach their fullest potential.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL FOR A GENERAL MANAGER TO POSSESS?

Surround yourself with great people. I never want to be the smartest person in the room. Being a good teacher and an active listener, as well as learning from each other promotes growth.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF WORKING AT MERCEDES-BENZ OF MIDLOTHIAN?

I love how our store is more relationship-based than simply transactional. The personal relationships developed between our clients and our staff are extremely important across the board. We value the repeat opportunities and our clients' trust in us. The excitement when a customer takes delivery is contagious, whether it's their first Benz or they have owned over 50. We have an incredible brand and always strive to do business right.

HOW DO YOU STAND OUT COMPARED TO INDIVIDUALS IN COMPARABLE POSITIONS AT OTHER COMPANIES?

I try my best to care for the customers, clients, and employees. Helping and watching individuals grow both personally and professionally is very gratifying to me.  I also have a strong network of talented managers with whom I share and discuss ideas.

WHEN YOU AREN'T RYAN PULLEY, GENERAL MANAGER AT MERCEDES, WHO ARE YOU?

I am a lucky husband to my wife Niki and a proud father to my daughter Kennedy (15) and my son Hudson (11). In addition to my wife and kids, my mom lives with us, which makes for a special experience for both her and her grandchildren. Ultimately, I am just a normal guy who works hard to take care of the people I love.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND PASSIONS OUTSIDE OF WORK?

I enjoy traveling with my family and friends, sports cars, home theater, video games, pro hockey, European soccer, and watching great movies. I also love to practice Tae Kwon Do with my daughter and son, and as of today, we have all earned our red belts! And a half-sweet, half-unsweet tea with light ice from Chick-fil-A always hits the spot for me!

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A MANAGEABLE WORK-LIFE BALANCE?

The retail and customer service industry can be quite demanding when it comes to maintaining a work-life balance. With long hours and the need to stay connected to the store even when at home, it can become quite difficult. However, having a team of competent and skilled individuals in the right roles is crucial for success. It's important to love what you do and work with a team with the same passion. Taking family vacations annually and relaxing with loved ones on Sundays are essential for maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?

To always stay humble, be grateful, continue learning every day, and consistently strive for personal and professional growth.

HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY?

I support my community by shopping locally and donating items to charities like Hope Thrift, Habitat for Humanity, Crater Community Hospice and Thrift, Toys for Tots, Christmas Mother, and Sheltering Arms. At Mercedes-Benz, we collaborate with the Richmond Tennis Association to support tournaments and the Rising Stars Program, which helps underprivileged youth learn tennis. We also participate in the McDonald's Mid-Atlantic Clay Court Championships and contribute to various community events such as the American Cancer Society tournament, Cosby Classic Golf Tournament, and Massey Golf tournament. Additionally, we support VCU Athletics, James River High School, Robious Elementary, RISE Baseball, and the Robious Athletic Association. Even more, our commitment to the community extends to many organizations like Sheltering Arms, an institution close to my heart due to my father's deep involvement.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE THE READERS TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I want to express my sincere gratitude to all our clients for the opportunities they have given us. I am also truly grateful for our dedicated team members and their passion for delivering excellent customer service. Without our clients and our team, we would simply have a collection of exceptional cars in a beautiful facility. It is the people who make all the difference.
